Hey I am excited to see what Marquette is ranked in the new polls tomorrow. I feel they deserve something like 19 or 20. Baylor I know lost and I feel like Louisville will drop behind us. What does everyone else feel we will be ranked?

Daniel

They will be tough on us - I think we might be 24 or 25, but I hope we are higher.

AZWarrior

Why will they be tough?  We beat two good (one ranked) teams and a lot of ranked teams lost.  So what is your logic?

I'd like to see us at 20-22.  High enough for notice but not high enough to get over confident (I hope).
All this talk of rights.  So little talk of responsibilities.

Pardner

19/20...maybe Dayton and Bucky make it.  WVU will be ahead of us.

Doctor V

IMO we should pass Michigan, Ohio St., Minnesota, Baylor, Louisville, and Gonzaga and be a toss up w/ Xavier and Tenessee so that puts us in the 18/19 range in the coach's poll

They were tough on us dropping us 10 spots with the Dayton loss, and out after losing to # 8 Tennesee.  I hope we are 20 or better, but crawling back into the rankings is usually slower and more tedious that dropping out.

Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Kansas will all be higher.  I really don't expect Marquette to move at all.

+1. I'll start.

Wisconsin:
1) We beat them.
2) Only win over a ranked team was an 8-point one over #23 Michigan. Our win over 'Nova was bigger, and our decimation of Cincy was a bigger statement than their 4-pt win over Penn State.
3) With the exception of their game against UConn (which they lost), our OOC schedules were fairly comparable.
4) Straight numbers-wise, we have a better record.
5) Because Bo Ryan sucks.

West Virginia:
1) They lost to Davidson (#23) and Kentucky (unranked). We lost to Tennessee (#15 or something) and Dayton (soon to be ranked).
2) Their only big win was against #15 OSU. Our big wins were over Nova and Madison.
3) This week they beat Seton Hall. This week we beat Nova and destroyed Cincy.

Somebody else can argue Kansas.

Note to all posters rankings don't matter unless you are working for a major television affiliate and what to spice up a game where no one knows either team. This aint' the BCS, keep beating top 50 RPI teams and I'll be happy.  Thinking and caring about this is crazy, id rather not be ranked and have Marquette playing with a chip on their shoulder all year round.

Rankings go get the University national exposure - which may help bring in new students/applications/ etc.  It also gives us some recogition to potential recruits, perhaps making it easier to recruit to a degree.  And, it doesn't hurt.

bs4173

Try convincing students to come out in droves when their team is unranked. Try keeping them away when the team's in the Top 15. Crowds don't win games, but they certainly help, and the students are the loudest part by far.

Also, a nice ranking probably doesn't hurt the general respect that MU gets from the press, other coaches, etc who will all be more or less weighing in directly or indirectly when Selection Sunday rolls around.

At the least, we should be 22. I would like to see 20, but these polls have too much reputation politics in them. We should definitely be ahead of Whisky, and Louisville should be out of the top 25 with three losses--but eveybody thinks Pitino is Naismith's gift to basketball. He is an overrated vagabond and should be racing thoroughbreds full time.

A lot of top 25 teams lost, we don't need to leapfrog all of those teams, we just need to move over the teams that lost.  I see us around the 19-20 range.

GO_MU02

rpi wise, here are some of the current numbers for marquette and some of the teams mentioned in the earlier posts:

7- west virginia
23- marquette
26- gonzaga
35- wisconsin
42- louisville
44- kansas

and just for fun
217- its indiana, its indiana

The problem is that the pollsters don't spend that much time looking at this stuff.  Especially the coaches.  We may be in the top 20, but pollsters look at last week's rankings and just adjust accordingly.

ecompt

There is no way in hell Wisconsin should be ranked ahead of us.

Sweenz

Parrish on CBS has us at #14, with Wisconsin at #15

Maybe too high for Marquette- but I suspect in a few weeks when we have one of the top records in the BE, we will get close to the top 10, despite having a weak schedule (not really weak, but comparitavly speaking) to begin the Big East.
