Home  in Lake Geneva for couple days for Xmas and went into Milwaukee for Real Chili and the game Sunday.  What's being built at 13th and Wisconsin?  In the 60's there was a great culinary institution on that corner.  As to the game, I was surprised at the crowd.  Pretty good showing for opponent and time of year.

Can't remember the name of the building but its going to be the "one stop shop" for students.  Finanacial Aid, Admissions, Registrar, etc will all be housed there.

oh, and it's ahead of schedule; apparently it'll be done by Fall 2009

Was that where Grebe's and the old bookstore used to be located?

Grebe's = home of the $1 ham and cheese sandwich.  Those things saved me

Was just back on campus today for the first time in a few, I am a big fan of the new Sweeney's Book Store location in the old "China Garden" restaurant.

Well played Sweeney.

China Garden? Pft. Super China!
But I like to throw handfuls...

Grebe's was further east at 12th.  Dal's is the answer to this puzzle.  Frankly, they should have built a shrine! ::)

Dal's was the first place I visited the Friday night I came to MU for Freshman Orientation. Next to it was the old Abbot Crest Hotel.

"China Garden? Pft. Super China!"

And at night the "S" was burned out and it was "uper China".  Very Nice.

I'd leave Schroeder late at night, early in the morning  and get a California burger (or two) at Dal's.  I loved the place; it was the best after Real.  My kids, none of whom went to MU, all know exactly where it was.  They cringe when we drive buy :P

Dal's had the best vanilla ice cream too. Anyone remember the walkways that used to exist under Wisconsin Ave.?

What year was Dal's?

It was there until the early 70's.  I graduated in '70 and left Milwaukee in '73, I think it was still there in '73.

4everwarriors

Yep, there were at least two tunnels around 11th and 13th whereby you could cross Wisconsin Ave. They were closed up around 1970.

Wouldn't be an issue if Avenue Commons was built!!!!!!!!!!!

You know how many New York kids thought those were subway entrances when they first saw them?

What is Avenue Commons?  (sorry, been a while since I've been on campus!)

mu72warrior

Dal's was there in '72, great greasy burgers!

wildbill sb

Whoa there, youngsters.  Not only was there a tunnel under Wisconsin Avenue at 13th Street, there was Milt's Hamburgers.  Talk about grease!

Badgerhater

Avenue Commons was an MU public relations disaster in the mid 1990s where the university wanted to close WI AVE through campus.   They were rather arrogant toward the city and once the hospital said it would interrupt ambulance service, then it was dead in the water.  Generated lots of hard feelings from the city toward MU.
