I know it was delay of game, and that he (or somebody) had been warned about 7 seconds earlier. But for the life of me I couldn't figure out what he had done.

CAINMUTINY

From what I could hear on the broadcast he said "You gotta be f***ing kidding me".....any confirmation on that?

Dom was warned for the delay of game when he flipped the ball to the ref after the basket.  He then went to the center of the court and there wasn't a referee within 20 or 30 feet of him.  I was fairly close and didn't hear anything.  Not saying he didn't say anything just that I didn't hear it.  His body language definitely said "you gotta be kidding me" but I don't think it warranted a T.  As bad as (if not worse) than the Thabeet T in the UConn/Gonzaga game.

I guess every ref is different.  This one liked to jog before the game, punt the air on a kicked ball call, and call T's fairly easily.  (The kicked ball call was my favorite.)

Rosiak's blog reports:

"-- I had a good vantage point on the technical on Dominic James.

The official warned MU for delay of game after James had trouble getting the ball back to the official after a basket. On his way downcourt, James twice tried telling the official that he couldn't get the ball out of his hands before the official blew his whistle and T'd James up.

This occured about 2 1/2 minutes into the game, with the T coming from the least experienced official on the crew."

I didn't see the game, nor am I an expert on the rules (surely somebody on this board is), but I have the impression that once the ball goes through the basket, the scoring team is not supposed to touch the ball. Makes sense: When one team scores, it's the other team's ball, and it's up to the other team to retrieve the ball and take it out of bounds. Any touch of the ball by a member of the scoring team, even to politely hand the ball to the ref or the opponent, could be interpreted as a delay. On those occasions when I've noticed players for a scoring team touching the ball first after a score, the ball usually is given to the ref, not to the opponents.

Most odd in my view is the fact that the call came as early as it did (2 1/2 minutes into the game, Rosiak reports). Usually, the delay of game call only comes late in the game, when a touch by a scoring player might be enough of a delay to affect the outcome.

Ultimately, it's a ref's judgment call.

Only problem is that Tenn did this the entire game after every made basket to slow us down, with nary a warning.  Same with the heavy touch hand checks that Dayton also employed.  Two examples of where the NCAA officials need to be consistent from game to game.  A charge/block is a judgement call...a delay or a heavy hand check is pretty clear.

I was sitting very close, and saw the whole thing, and was in earshot of the situation. First of all, when the ball got bounced around after the bucket, he tossed it back to the ref, which is acceptable in every game of basketball I've seen.

The ref called the warning, and was no closer than 20 feet away from Dom. Dom didn't say anything loud enough to even be heard, and it looked to me like he just shot the guy a look. Apparently that's enough.

This ref apparently works A-Sun and Sun Belt games, but was put in a BE game. Looked to me like he had to be the show. It was a ridiculous display, and that guy shouldn't even sniff a BE game for awhile.

agreed - my son and I were sitting really close yesterday and we couldn't see DJ say anything.  Must of been "the look" and with some egomanical refs, that is all it takes.

Is that seriously what the call was every time he did that?! Sitting up in the 400's we had no idea what was going on everytime he did that - but thought for sure that he was trying to implement a new punting rule.

Sounds like a Barney Fife to me...  Why would anyone want to be a ref.  Hightower still is the one that gets me.  I'd love to know how he juggles both jobs.

Maybe what I thought I heard was really coing from the bench or the broadcasting crew

I definitely heard that too on the radio, and I figured it was him, but theres a chance the technical was given and then he said that. Either way thats a quick T, and i have seen players throw the ball to the ref a million times, and I could picture a person not getting the ball outta their hands. Just kinda bobbling it or it slipping away.
