Great article about why low profile DI programs do what they do, ie. play on the road against top ranked teams...blurb about Marquette

"  'We're going to Marquette on Dec. 28," said Presbyterian head coach Gregg Nibert, who collected a check from Clemson last month after a 79-58 loss in a guaranteed game. "They needed a game. So they gave us $85,000, air and ground transportation and two nights' lodging.' "

This is why it bothers me when we do the "hey, you suck" chant to teams like this...they are not at the BC to win....against other BE teams (and UW) im all for it though...

Wow :o...$85,000 for a buy game. I remember reading an ESPN article a couple of years ago about scheduling and the going rate was in the $40,000-$60,000 range.

I know some school on the East Side that won't be happy to hear were paying Presbyterian that much money...

85 G's!?!?!

You could buy two hyperbaric chambers for that amount of money

Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel show a lot of class to cupcakes.

Wow.  I am shocked by $85k .. UWM was getting "a premium" and that was $58-62k per year.

Hey, they do suck.  They aren't at the BC to win, they're in it for the money and the two night all expenses paid vacation to beautiful Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Sounds like a heck of a deal; I'm sure they don't need to be catered to by the fans as well.  Just plugging in some random numbers for lodging, transportation, and game attendance of 15,000, and I came up with $6 per fan that shows up going into their pockets.  Who knows how accurate that is, but $85k plus travel and lodging for a poorly attended game means they can either take abuse from the fans or hold up a big "thank you" sign at the game.

ecompt

with our depleted roster, do you realize where we would be without cupcakes? $85G is money well spent.

plus transportation and lodging to show up and play. I knew that money changed hands for these types of non-conference games, but I didn't realize it was so high.

Isn't that less than what we paid UWM?
The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture.

Look about 10 threads down about cupcakes.

$85 k plus travel and lodging is definitely alot.  However if you cannoy fill a game and it is geting late in the process the bidding goes up.

Hayward is right and that does happen at times.  It's unfortunate that the Preby coach had to say the amount publicly, it certainly doesn't help MU and others who are paying the rates.

shaquilvaine

Presbyterian must have had a bunch of high profile donors pony up some cash toward that 85K so that MU would recognize "the quality of their program."

Another reason (besides a paycheck) that coaches of lower D1 schools schedule teams like MU is so they can tell recruits, "We play Winthrop, but we'll try to schedule a Big East school, too."

Somebody from the Big South gets to go to the Big Dance; it could be these guys.

If cupcakes receive that much, how much are cowpies like Indiana going for?
