Protects our players from foul trouble & throws a monkey wrench in opponents' offensive flow.  Love it!

Muhoops85

Apparently the refs have adjusted as Burke has picked up two fouls for what looks to be breathing on his opponent.  That little exchange basically ended the game right there, we'll see.

Is Buzz retarded?   He should have stuck with the zone.   What the f is he doing?

Fred Garvin

Ya why did we get out of it?Tenn. was struggling while they were in it.

He should also work the refs more. A smile after every bad call against your players is not going to get the refs to change their direction.

He's still a young guy he's not going to get any respect so I'm not worried about that.   But when Tennessee stretched it out is for that 3 minutes we went to man.   May have cost us the game.

CTWarrior

We don't rebound well out of the 1-3-1 but it was obviously our most effective defense.

Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

What cost us was the game was a career night by Chism and a bunch of BS calls.

MU couldn't sustain th 1-3-1 with all the foul trouble and our lack of personnel.

BTW, calling our coach "retarded" is not necessary or helpful.

Truth.

We played a competitive game given the horrendous calls, the "neutral" court, the sensitive lil nancy ref calling a T on DJ, JM in early foul trouble, and Chism having a monster game.

If you want to call anyone retarded, it's Chism.  No, not taking anything away from his stellar night, but that kid's headband has got to go.  It's a frickin' headband designed to soak up sweat...not a MF'ing tiara.

But nonetheless, Jizzm uh...Chism had a great game.

On the other hand, how about Wesley Matthews, huh?  Beast of a game...too bad the other guys couldn't step it up...whether they were in capable of it or due to the horrendous officiating...but still, Wes had a great game.

It definitely could have been much worse.

The 1-3-1 is a very nice change of pace, but it isnt something we can stick with for long periods of time. They started to figure it out a bit, and i dont know about anyone else but i thought that we dodged a lot of bullets in that defense with open threes, loose rebounds, or guys driving and dishing. I love that Buzz uses it and keeps teams on their toes and can help change the momentum, but we can't stay in it for more than a few possessions in a row, at least in my opinion.

MUfan12

The zone worked to an extent, but it really hurt them on the glass, and Buzz said that's why he had to go back to a man.

I love how he's flexible enough to change defenses though.

As far as working the refs, I agree to an extent. That crew was a mess, and I'm not sure kicking the scorers table over would have done a thing.

Higgins is still a horses ass.

+1

The 1-3-1 definitely shut the Vols down in regards to shooting and offensive flow.  We just couldn't box out and continued to foul using the defense because of all the second chances Tenn was able to get.  If we boxed out (properly - Hayward was called for a few fouls for not boxing out well enough) and not fouled, we probably would have had a different story to talk about today.

Amen.

+100,000 to loving the zone (when properly rotated in and out)

and a big +1,000,000 to Buzz having to work the refs. While he never got T'd up much, even the tanned one got heated with them when necessary. I think learning how to establish this rapport will come over time, though.

MUfan12

If you get a chance, watch the Buzz TV show on TWC. They had him mic'd against TxSo. He works the refs plenty, just has a different style. He got on em good, but he did it in a disarming way. Which means when he really goes off on a ref they'll know something's up.

The fact that he threw up his hands and laughed doesn't bother me at all. The more I thought about it, nothing he could have done short of sleeping with Higgins' 102 year old mother could have changed the way that crew worked last night.

Murff has a nice breakdown of the zone on MarquetteHoops.com
