Is this entry accurate? Did Deane recruit Wade while at MU?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Deane

Not Deane specifically, it was Rob Jeter as Deane's assistant, he got Wade and his coach to take an unofficial to MU during Wade's junior year.  When Crean's group took over, Tim Buckley became the assistant responsible for recruiting Wade.

There is a major inaccuracy in the article--Deane left MU following the 1999 season.  Wade didn't attend MU until the fall of 2000.  He did not leave the program the year Wade came to Marquette--he left nearly a year and a half before Wade arrived on campus, and nearly four months before Wade even made his verbal commitment.

I don't doubt that Deane had Wade on his lists--he attempted to recruit virtually every good player in Illinois, landing very few.  The article could just as easily state that Deane recruited Quentin Richardson while at Marquette as well.

Umm...Deane actually did recruit Richardson, much more than he ever recruited Wade, and many around the Richardson recruitment though MU was the leader for his services back then.

Richardson used to come up to MU with Cordell Henry all the time, and they would play pick up games with team at the Old Gym.  The coaching staff thought they were getting a package deal of Henry and Richardson, and when Richardson picked DePaul some members of the staff were shocked to say the least.

Did Pepsi have anything to do with it?  If you know what I mean.   ;)

The coaching staff may have been shocked, but I don't recall ever really thinking "DAMN!  How did we let him get away?"

Yeah. It was my impression that DePaul was the frontrunner all the way.

Understood.

The problem is that Deane didn't sign either player to a letter of intent, so its disingenuous to declare those recruitments as a major accomplishment.

Dean told me that Cords wouldn't let him recruit a guy like Wade.  He said Cords wouldn't let him look at a guy like Merrit either.  He said he would never have gotten them into school at Marquette.  So I don't think he even tried with those guys.

I was under the impression Deane was a stickler for academics and thus shied away from players he considered risks. Am I wrong?

I wonder if Cords killed the Robert Jackson recruiting too? Just like in business, you need to sell it.

Well, I don't buy it.  Why, just look at some of the players that KO recruited that played for Deane.  A few of them were not exactly academic wizards.  Deane liked smart kids, good attitudes, who could play ball.  Nothing wrong with that philosophy but you need an athlete or two as well.  In my opinion he soured on some of the babysitting he had to do with players he inherited and didn't want to go after any risks after that, but no way Cords would have said no to those names mentioned when you consider some that Cords and U. said yes to only a few years earlier.
