Former Henry Sibley forward Trevor Mbakwe verbally committed to playing for the Gophers next season. Mbakwe, who played at Marquette last season before transferring to Miami-Dade Community College for the upcoming season, called Tubby Smith on Thursday night to tell him.

The 6-7, 220-pound power forward gives the Gophers an athletic, physical player in the post and potentially makes Smith's 2009 recruiting class one of the top 10 in the nation. Mbakwe joins California prep point guard Justin Cobbs, Robbinsdale Cooper's Rodney Williams and Hopkins' Royce White in making a verbal commitment to play for the Gophers next season.

Mbakwe said Smith's impact on the program made choosing Minnesota over numerous SEC schools and nearby Miami easier. His family, which lives in the Twin Cities, also advised him to go with the Gophers.

"Just seeing what coach Smith could do in one year ... how he changed the whole atmosphere about the Gophers," Mbakwe said about choosing Minnesota. "It was a one-way situation. And it's home, too."

Shocking development

Why didn't he go right to Minnesota?

Either going Juco or straight to Minnesota he misses a year of Div I ball.  Going Juco he gets to play this year whereas in Minnesota he could only practice.

Just mind boggling that after all the smoke last spring and then denying it, he transfers anyway at the last possible moment....was he trying to shaft us??

So to get this straight, he still plays at Miami this upcoming season, right?

Never mind, just read the article more closely.  What a ridiculous series of events.

I think he meant to say "win-win" situation not one way

Going to a junior college and wasting a year of eligibility is one of the craziest things ever. This guy must have no patience and think he's going pro after 4 years no matter what. Did Minnesota start school a month before us? I imagine Tubby would have given him a scholarship in September.
