UConn freshman basketball player Nate Miles was expelled from the university Thursday following a hearing that looked into allegations he assaulted a fellow UConn student.

Miles, 20, was arrested Sept. 22 for violating a restraining order.

He is accused of contacting the 19-year-old UConn student, his former girlfriend, some 16 minutes after a restraining order barring him from having any contact with her was issued.

He appeared briefly in Rockville Superior Court Tuesday and is due back there on those charges Nov. 25. There is also a hearing in civil court Monday in regard to extending the restraining order.

The university's decision, which was made by one or more administrative hearing officers, can be appealed within five business days. Miles, reached by phone Thursday night, said he wasn't sure if he would file an appeal.

"I don't know," said Miles, who answered most of the questions he was asked with the same words.

The 6-foot-7 Miles, a native of Toledo, Ohio, took a long and circuitous route to UConn. He attended five high schools and was accepted into the school only after a lengthy review by the NCAA Eligibility Center and by UConn administrators.

Miles committed to UConn in November 2006 but didn't arrive in Storrs until this summer. He was asked Thursday if it was a disappointing end to such a long journey.

"I don't know," Miles said. "I really don't know what to say."

In a sworn affidavit that was used to issue the restraining order, the female UConn student told police that her relationship with Miles began Sept. 6. She stated that "the first time we had sex it was consensual" and that the next few times the two were together in Miles' dorm room that he pressured her to have sex again.

"When I told him no, he would tell me we were going to anyway," the affidavit reads.

The document goes on to detail what the alleged victim describes as physical and sexual assault.

Both Miles and the alleged victim were given a chance to testify separately at Thursday's university hearing.

According to the Student Conduct Code at UConn, a hearing body can impose a number of sanctions, including a warning, university probation, university suspension and expulsion. The administrative hearing officers, assuming they followed procedures described in the conduct code, relied on the following language in that book:

"When an Accused Student has been found 'Responsible' on any charge, the Hearing Body shall review the student's academic transcript and student conduct history, hear impact statements by both the Accused Student and Complaining Party, and impose the appropriate sanction(s)."

Has to be some sort of record. Huggy Bear needs to beat that or he's getting soft at WVU.

this is definitely the caliber of student athlete one typically sees in a huggins program, jim calhoun must be upping his offers if he can steal criminals from huggins now.

if he somehow wins the appeal we need to find a pic of this girl and make it a big head for the game

When did freshman become 20 years old?  I couldn't read much more after that.  I thought freshman at college were usually 17-19 at this point in the school year... 20?

He reclassified.  He was originally a 2007 kid an committed to Xavier, and ended up as a 2008 kid at UConn.  He went through 6 high schools in 5 years trying to get the academics straight.  He even tried to graduate early and join UConn last January, but didn't get cleared by the NCAA.

It's not like it is uncommon these days where more basketball players are spending 5 years in HS.  Lazar Hayward was 20 by the time his freshman season started, he did two prep years at Notre Dame Prep, and spent 3-4 years at his initial high school in Buffalo.

I seem to remember Diener spending an extra year in high school.  I'm always amazed how quickly some are to judge others, especially when they can hide behind a computer.  Give me a break.  You don't know anything about this kid.  Going after Calhoun is a bit of stretch as well.

The Big East will have to take the Derrick Caracter jersey down from the rafters.

Calhoun is no saint, avid. Two years ago, his star point guard had to sit out the first half of a season for trying to sell stolen laptops.

I didn't say he was a saint; however, his star point guard did not have to sit out the first half of the season.  Calhoun put his butt on the bench, and has done so with many of his players in the past.  So is Calhoun one of very few coaches recruiting "troubled" athletes or is Calhoun one of few coaches who isn't afraid (and is secure enough in his job) to sit down "troubled" athletes.  Lute Olson is another guy that sits players down often.  Look at the NBA players from UCon. they seem to do much better with their actions then players from a program such as Duke where they recruit "first-class" kids and constantly tell them how great they are...  Just my opinion.

🏀

Avid, you serious?

Two players got busted for stealing laptops. The star player sat out the cupcake games while the lesser player sat forever.

Calhoun has a reputation to be one of the dirtiest, whiniest and unethical coaches out there.

Im not hiding behind a computer, and I am not bashing this guy for being a freshman at age 20.  I was surprised by that, that was all.  Look at my post, not once did I mention the athletes name, nor bash him, just surprised by the age.

No I don't know anything about this kid, BUT I do know that he was just EXPELLED from UCONN for Assaulting a student.  That I DO know.  Sounds like character issues to me, but what do I know, I am just hiding behind a computer and running my fingers on my keypad.

What Duke players have had character issues in the NBA?  Please explain.

No, I think it was his parents' call to hold him back a year in elementary school. But that was calculated because of his growth - which would place him above most of his grade-level peers.

But this issue...doesn't surprise me.

You are right McCheese.  Duke players don't have a lot of character issues.  Most of their issues stem from their lack of basketball skills or balance skills when riding motorcycles.   ;D

avid1010

Christian Laetner wasn't so clean.  Hurley and J. Williams felt invincible.  I think you do a lot more damage to a kid when you use the military psychology of knocking one down then building one up to feel invincible.

What I do know is Calhoun sits his players down and you don't hear about that at other schools.  Is that because "Conn U" is the only school to recruit players with behavior issues.  I highly doubt it.

Emeka Okafor, Ray Allen, Rip Hamilton, etc... all seem like pretty classy guys in relation to many NBA players.
