Well....since you asked...yes you can.  Just click the "Profile" tab at the top, the click "Account Related Settings" on the left - and then you can change your display "Name".  Your user name (the name used to log into the site) stays the same however.

Thought I hope not everyone does that at once - we'd lose track of who is who.

Hmmm...unless this is just something Moderators can see (embarrassed to say I don't know).  You can go to your profile and see for yourself: Ignored by:     ? members

Also, you should be able to see the exact list by clicking on the Ignore user options in the left column of your profile page.
