Not sure I care:

I would rate our position at the top of that list -- slightly above Cal and LSU. LSU can throw a lot of $$ at a candidate if they choose to, but they'll always be second fiddle to football there, even given their solid hoops tradition. Cal is in a great league (as is OSU), but no better than ours, and we trump them in tradition and support.

rocky_warrior

I think you're missing Oklahoma State.

I'm not exactly sure of the order beyond the majors,  but I think I'd put the top spots as:

1) Cal
2) LSU
3) OK St
4.1) Oregon St.
4.2) Marquette
5) Providence

Of course, that's assuming money is no object at any of the schools.  In general, I think weather and state schools have an advantage over us.  But, money is an obstacle at some places, and that's where ranking any one job against another is screwy.

BTW - here's a full list of the options:

Definitely. We can compete in that arena, but only to a point. Still, if that is the basis for attractiveness, then we wouldn't be at the top. But I think (or would like to) that for many coaches, $$ isn't the only criteria once you're in the ballpark.

rocky_warrior

Absolutely.  And for Marquette the "attractiveness" of the job is probably also dependent on whether the guy grew up in the midwest.  Heck, in another 10 years we'll even have to worry about hiring a coach that's too young and won't remember Al's days - or even have heard much of them.

On Homer's show this afternoon Mike DeCourcy specifically addressed the Oregon State opening and said that the Marquette job is way better.

Cal is great, Berkley is a beautiful campus.

I would say we are right there after Cal.

Coobeys Oil Depot

A program that went 0-18 in the Pac-10 and hasn't won a meaningful game in 20 years is a better opening then Marquette? Holy crap!!!

Heavy hitters in both Pac-10 and Big East so California might win because of the weather. Pickens' money makes OK State very attractive but once you misstep Pickens, you're fucked in Stillwater.

Right now, Marquette is one of the two best opportunities out there.

Dish

1. MU (I personally think it's head and shoulders above the rest)

2. Cal (The way Braun was let go will be a turn off to a lot of coaches. Cal was only paying Braun $982,000 which is partly why MU trumps Cal)

3. LSU (will always be a good/decent job thanks to Dale Brown. Football is king at LSU)

4. Oklahoma St. (They'll either hire big time with Gillispie or Self for mega bucks, or go after Lowery/Bronwell type at around what Sutton made. Football is again king here)

The rest kind of fall in line after that. It all boils down to what someone wants. If a coach is looking for big bucks, outstanding facilities, metropolitan area to live in, unparallelled control over a program, power conference, plenty of exposure, good returning team...MU offers all of these. Not that the rest don't offer multiple qualities, but to me, MU is clearly at the top of the pack.

He's right. That job has been a career killer since Ralph Miller retired.

1. LSU --- oodles of local talent, only major program in the state (sorry Tulane fans) and permissive academic standards = powerhouse potential.

2. Marquette -- university has and should continue to pour substantial resources into the program, top-notch facilities, great fan support, hoops is king.

3. Cal -- a sleeping giant? Excellent school, excellent conference, excellent recruiting base.

4. Okie State -- had recent success under Eddie Sutton, but will always play second fiddle to the Sooners.

5. Providence -- a place where the right coach (i.e. Pitino, Barnes, Gillen) can succeed.

6. Western Kentucky -- a very, very solid mid-major program for a long time now.

7. Oregon State -- seems like this program has been bad forever, but being in a major conference gives it an edge over what's left.

8. Toledo
9. Mizzou St.
10. Loyola Marymount
11. Marist

University of California- DUDE!?

Marquette- DUH... TC debacle may have moved this lower as a serious and attractive school to coach.

Louisiana State University- Huge, with no true nearby competition- good league- recent sucess.

Oklahoma State University/Oregon State University- TIED: Oregon has the conference I'd prefer, but OK St. seems to have more potential for doing damage in the league

Providence- BIG EAST!!! That's about the only draw, unfortunately.

Western Kentucky- the penultimate stepping stone school... up/down up/down... coaches come here to rise.

Loyola Marymount University- always interesting.

Rice University- love the academics.  really ought to be more than the northwestern of the south.

Toledo University- you ever drive through Toledo???  blech.

Missouri State University (Cuonzo Martin?)- Uh, who?

Marist University-  At the least Missouri State's name tells you where it is....

1.  Oklahoma State U - Big Money, been very good for a long time.  If you were a college basketball recruit, would YOU want to play for Sean Sutton?  A good coach could do very well here.
2.  Louisiana State - MU better now, but more potential here
3.  Marquette - Only thing missing is that it is not a state school with the automatic fan base that implies
4.  Oregon State - Similar to MU, but MU gets the nod for more recent prominence
5.  California - Great campus from what I hear, but does anybody in California really care about Cal basketball?
6.  Providence - Has been a deathbed for past few coaches, either in this job or the next.  Providence is a very nice college town if you'e a student, though
7.  Western Kentucky - Best of the mid major openings
8.  Your guess is as good as mine
Calvin:  I'm a genius.  But I'm a misunderstood genius.
Hobbes:  What's misunderstood about you?
Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

The Man in Gold

I count 1 NCAA tournament team in that list and 1 top 25 team.  Guess who that is?

Providence
Western Kentucky
Missouri State University (Cuonzo Martin?)
Loyola Marymount University
Toledo University
Rice University
Marist University
