My wife and I were just there in April. Our best meal was at Gallo Blanco in Phoenix. In addition to some nice apps, I had the La Bomba Torta and it was spectacular - just bursting with flavors. And the place is VERY reasonably priced, too.

I'd recommend that if you go any place with "Barrio" in the name, you choose the original: Barrio Cafe on 16th St in Phoenix. Barrio Queen and a few others are fine, but Barrio Cafe is much better IMHO (sorry Ardmore).

We really liked a brewery on Scottsdale Rd near the Tempe line: Fate Brewery. Enjoyed several real good beers and some surprisingly good food.

My wife loves the prime rib sandwich at Houston's in Scottsdale. They have really good ribs, too.

For a beautiful setting, we like to do a late lunch overlooking the 18th green at Grayhawk golf club in north Scottsdale. It's usually packed around normal lunch time, so we go around 2:30.

My wife is a big-time ramen enthusiast and really liked Clever Ramen on Scottsdale Rd.

Enjoy!

BBQ: little miss bbq (sunny slope) is some of the best bbq I've ever had.

Brewery: arizona wilderness, I tend to think the beer scene in Phoenix is poor relative to many other cities but this is an exception with a really enjoyable beer garden plus it's one of the few dense and walkable neighborhoods of the whole GMA so it's worth checking out. Other recommendations would be wren house and pedal haus (I prefer Tempe location).

food: Fire At Will

It's astounding to me why someone would spend $100 on a meal when they could make it at home for $20.

Just kidding. My suggestion for Scottsdale is Sunday Brunch at Morning Would for their 6 course prix fixe.

You asked for Phoenix and Scottsdale, so I doubt you're planning to head far out to the East valley...but there's a breakfast place in Apache Junction that is fantastic -- Toast.

It's a hike if you're not planning to be out that direction anyway. But if you are in the neighborhood, I recommend it highly. We actually ate there three times the last time we were in Phoenix. I ate something different each time - each meal was delicious. In the times that I've been there with a number of different people, nobody has ever been disappointed. And I introduced my Phoenix-area family to the place and they've returned a number of times.

P.S. Ask for the habanero hot sauce. You're welcome.

Thanks everyone for the food recommendations in the Phoenix area!  We will have to try some of them the next couple of days.

Definitely not heading out to East Valley --> farthest east will be We-Ko-Pa GC.  We also will be spending time in Sedona, but will have a house for that part of the trip and are likely to eat in.

Go to Pizzeria Bianco (downtown) just after lunch, put in for a table, expect to wait 2 hours+.
Go to their little bar next door, bring a deck of cards, amuse yourself.
Be pleasantly surprised when the wait is only 105 minutes.
Enjoy the best pizza this side of Napoli.

That's absolutely shocking.  I have a dozen friends in the Phoenix area and zero have recommended it... and they're not small men.

Chris Bianco is arguably the best pizza cook in the US, he uses AZ ingredients, slow food mentality. He’s a riot to listen to. Style isn’t for everyone, but it’s good.

I'm not understanding how this is material to the conversation.

I liked the pizza - which the NYT famously called the best in America - but it's certainly not the best I've had. IMHO, it's not worth the ridiculous wait, except for those who want to check it off their to-do-in-Phoenix list.

And speaking of something that's always listed on things to do in Phoenix ...

All the times visiting there, I had never gone to Taliesin West, the Frank Lloyd Wright workshop/home. We finally went in April and, well, I'd highly recommend skipping it. It was boring as eff, and it cost $88 for the two of us. After we ended our mercifully short visit, I asked my wife, "So, what did you think?" And she said: "Dollar-for-dollar, it might have been the worst 'tourist attraction' I've ever been to."

Phoenix has real good tacos, especially if you're visiting from the midwest. So good I'm surprised nobody has mentioned them yet. I don't remember great taquerias since it's been so long, but here's a quick list based on my google fu

Tacos Piratas is the only one on my list in Scottsdale. Good pastor and pollo - https://maps.app.goo.gl/Cg4Tfeas2eYdmX7q7
Tacos Sahuaro for buche tacos - https://maps.app.goo.gl/LeXGd6a7SJzU2mKZ6
El Rinconcito Del D.F. for pastor or suadero tacos - https://maps.app.goo.gl/MhgsJ1w4gvaU4GEa6
Tacos Chiwas for barbacoa tacos - https://maps.app.goo.gl/XsWmmYSsKPDw34cLA
Tacos Huicho - https://maps.app.goo.gl/qCNi7vfFBP1NKNr97
