Gosh, I remember that too well.

They were playing in Knoxville, Tennessee that weekend and my Dad packed my brothers and I in the car and drove the 160 miles or so from Nashville to Knoxville to watch our Warriors. That's where all the "fun" happened, at Stokley Athletic Center in Knoxville.

What people forgot was how much Marquette was hated by the powers that be in those days. We played a largely African-American team, we didn't play finesse ball, which was popular at the time, and we had in recent years manhandled Kentucky, with Adolph "the Bigot" Rupp. At the time, Coaches McGuire and Rupp really didn't like each other. This also was after Jim Chones turned pro and there was a strange fear that all our guys were secretly pro.

That was the year that might have been ....

Thank God we won that afternoon. Made the ride back to Nashville a lot more fun.

Thank you for posting this Dr B.  I didn't know this story.  Incredible stuff.

HutchwasClutch

Al as usual, handled the ridiculous situation perfectly.  This happened 51 years ago and reading it I feel outraged!

I the 60s we always seemed to be seeded to play Kentucky at Rupp Arena
I will never forget one year George Thompson was told he wouldn't finish the game and ,listening on the radio,
George made a jumper and was called
for an offensive foul , his fifth.
The announcer was incredulous as he
reported that the nearest player was
many feet away. It still pisses me off

We probably played at Memorial Coliseum since Rupp Arena didn't open until the 1970s.

Our foul, when we played in the south, was playing basketball while being African American. Which is why we never played down there unless we had to (Athens, GA, 1971).
