Very sad.  I know we have a rivalry with UW but she was a brilliant woman who got her dream job at Northwestern just before her diagnosis.  I had the pleasure of meeting her on a few occasions and she was kind, modest, and just a pleasure to be around.  May she rest in peace and condolences to her family.

Met her a number of times. Though you would think she would come off as a "typical academic," she was funny and personable. They loved her at UW.
"I am one of those who think the best friend of a nation is he who most faithfully rebukes her for her sins—and he her worst enemy, who, under the specious and popular garb of patriotism, seeks to excuse, palliate, and defend them" - Frederick Douglass
