Spelling of players' names aside, I agree that Kolak is way better than any of Wojo's tranfers.  ;D

You seem to be a favorite punching bag for some scoopers. Did you get beat up a lot in grade school?

Dj Carton, Matt Carlino, Andrew Rowsey, Katin Reinhardt would beg to differ

Jayce Johnson, Ed Morrow, and Koby Mcewen are saying let's see.

Yep. If Kolek is as good at his job as Katin and AR were, most Marquette fans would be pretty happy.

Here's hoping he's a real good player for us. We'll know a lot more a month from now -- not only about Kolek but about a lot of stuff -- after Illinois, Charleston, Madison and UCLA.

True. I was just having a little fun with dgies' comment in order to repeat the spelling error. Guess I wasn't clear on that. Agree that Wojo had some really good tranfers and Kolek has only one game under his belt.

That's an interesting question.  I'm inclined to say that "overachievement" is almost always a situation of being underestimated by someone else.

I start with an isolated case--some pundit states that Tyler Kolek is a bench player who won't contribue much. Then Tyler actually earns a starting role and dishes out 9 assists in his first game, a far better performance than that pundit thought he was capable of.

Did Tyler merely "overachieve?"  Or did he actually put in the hard work to achieve to the level that his talent allowed him to perform?  I suggest it's the latter.

Moreover, calling the outstanding prformance an "overachievement" seems to minimize the whole of Tyler's effort while at the same time absolving the initial pundit from taking any responsiblity for his erroneous prediction.

Saying the player or team overachieved to me seems to be a polite way to avoid saying "I was wrong in my prediction."

That makes sense. For me, when I talk about a team overachieving, I'm talking about a team performing better than the math says they should. We can argue until the cows come home about how accurate it is and whose math is the most legitimate, but it is possible to assign mathematical value to each player and project how good a team should be on paper. When a team performs better than that, I tend to say the overachieved. Not in the sense that they aren't as good as they seem or are overrated, but in the sense that for whatever reason be it coaching or system or strong player development or freshmen being underranked (or underperdicted), they are better than the math says they should be.

DJ Carton -- We shall see. With us one year and commanded a talented team with a losing record. Maybe he will play pro ball but don't hold your breath!

Matt Carlino, Andrew Rowsey & Katin Reinhardt -- Are you kidding me? Every damn one of them thought defense was an extra credit point when it came to playing basketball. Yeah, they could all shoot, but they probably gave up far more points than they ever scored. Having these guys play defense in a Marquette uniform was Al McGuire's purgatory. It's akin to having Satan throw another wad of hot coal on the cleansing flames of purgatory.

opinions not allowed, comrade?

"Comrade".  Adorable.

Opinions are certainly allowed as is the right to highlight the idiocy of said opinions.

Oh hell no. Too tall and too mean.

I was the kid most likely to stir the pot. With that privilege comes the reality that my intellect just might be over the heads of some. LOL

Uh, I'm pretty sure that's required in our terms of service.  Topper made us put it there for horsey sauce, but dgies wouldn't be the first to interpret it differently.

I like this team now and expect us to beat Illinois at home and compete and win many, many games this year!

Don't look now but duane might know what he's talking about.  To think, so many "experts" on this board chose to dismiss him during the great Wojo depression.  That's too bad.

The people Duane “personally” knows who avoided the game over stupid politics missed a great time!
