So, TAMU went ahead and did a lot of homework for everyone. I know there's lots of discussion already, but here is a really good breakdown of possibilities.

Ryan what was wrong with McMahon and Alexander? (Obviously Alexander is likely a lifer at Belmont but still curious)
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

Warrior_2002

Nice summary article.  Why porter Moser at the other coaches to consider?

Warrior_2002

My sense is this is potentially a diversity hire focus which is fine if we hire the best capable coach.  But please get me the best candidate.

Both took over solid mid-major programs and haven't really improved them outside of MacMahon's time with Ja Morant. Both also consistently play worse as the season goes on. Alexander was good at Lipscomb but his first two years at Belmont haven't been impressive. Neither have connections to MU's traditional recruiting grounds either.

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

Gotcha. Any thoughts on Eric Konkol?

Inconsistent. He swings wildly from way overperforming to way underperforming. Most of the data on him is pretty uninspiring, the one area he gets high marks is in March. 4-1 in the NCAAs, 5-0 in CBI.

Ok so big time Dennis Gates over him for you?  Worried a bit about his resume.  What about Archie?

geps

Very nice research but that's our list?

You can hate Wojo all you want but if those are the only possible replacements we should have waited another year. This is getting more worrisome.

Gates is high risk, high reward. I think he has a high ceiling, but you are right, the resume is really thin at this point. Could end up being a fart in the wind.

Archie wasn't fired when I compiled this data so he wasn't included. But if I wanted Archie Miller, I would have kept Wojo another year and had the donors build a new rec center or something. Similar to worse results despite a stronger starting point and historically stronger program.

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but FWIW Goodman thinks just like Shaka or Oates should be in the mix

Real Warriors Demand Excellence

GOO

Remember how Crean and Buzz would get their name out there for a raise and to show how much other teams want them.   Every year. Goodman was one of the PR pimps. My guess would be that Shaka does the same since he is not exactly beloved at UT. Make the fans and admin know that others want you.

If he were a serious candidate, I'd be happy with him as a choice. Not if the UT buyout had to be paid, however.

Good article and research. Based on this, Gates looks pretty good. But how wide was the research? MU needs to do a thorough search but also needs to get the ball rolling. Likely they already have. Hopefully for at least a week or two.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

What are thoughts on Ritchie Riley.   He seems to be killing recruiting and transfers and is up and coming and young.

Oats just signed a new deal with a $12.5 million buyout for this year.
Unless Marquette Athletics has a huge stash of NBA Top Shots they're ready to liquidate, Oats isn't an option.

Who we should at least interview:

Becky hammon
The oral roberts coach
Porter moser
Gates
Matta
Beilien

Hearing Beilein might actually be an option

Would be a home run hire. If he says yes, then it's possible he gave them the green light before canning Wojo since it was so sudden.

What do you even know about OR coach?  That he just beat tOSU?  lol

The reason for the high salaries is the high risk.
Getting fired is just part of the gig.

There are many parts to the selection criteria, it is a crap shoot.  To think otherwise is delusional.

Any coach can be a winner or loser, it only takes a player or two, a missed or made shot, a call this way or that.  An injury here or there, a transfer, a disgruntaled donor, a dominating trustee.  Short term thinking, exagerated expectations, greedy parents, negative publicity, there are many factors.

Buzz, for example, was a winner before he wasn't, Jay Wright was a loser before he became a winner, Greg McDermott W to L, Ewing L to W.

Bottom line, it really doesn't matter.  McGuire an L to W and then he got while on top.  The real trick is knowing when to fold them.   Take the money and run......

I might be an outlier, but I'm not terribly interested in a 68-year old coach. Even if everything goes right, there is a limited shelf life, and I'm not terribly interested in being right back here in a few years if we can potentially avoid it. I would probably give Pitino and/or Beilein a call...but it would be to judge how interested they were in convincing me they still plan to coach for more than just a short period.

And while Matta has excellent credentials, I would be really wary of a guy who had to retire due to complications of back surgery years ago. If I interviewed him at all, step 1 would be an exhaustive physical by a back specialist to convince me that the rigors of major D1 coaching wouldn't tear him right back down.

The most plausible and interesting candidates are the guys who are younger and energetic, but have proven their ability to win. Guys like Smith (Utah State) Gates (Cleveland State), Mills (ORU), and maybe Pasternak (UCSB). A guy like Moser (Loyola) would get a call, but his inconsistency is an issue.
