Providence is the lowest-ranked Big East team, and tonight is also a home game.

Markus has put up big numbers against the Friars, including 52 in one game two years ago.

So ... is tonight the last time in Markus' career to drop 50+ in a game?

And yes ... I realize we may never see another player again that this is a legitimate question.

BM1090

No.

1. Doubtful it happens again.

2. Providence is the worst BE team (per Kenpom) but that's mostly because of their offense. Their defense is good.

Marquette had 45 against very good K-State and Buffalo teams a year ago. If he's in video-game mode, he can score 50 against anybody.

But certainly, odds are long that he score 50 again in his career. Relatively few college basketball players even get to 30 points in a game, let alone 50.

Didn't Markus become the first player in the long and glorious history of the Big East to have two 50-point games? Before Markus came along, only six times in program history had a player scored 41 or more.

We are lucky to have gotten to see Markus be the elite scorer he is.

Hasn't he had his biggest scoring games on the road? At Providence and At Creighton?

There have been many games when Markus has been in the upper 30s or 40s and then shut it down because we were cruising to a win.

So, I think it is not about road/home, it is about the other team keeping it close.  Both his prior 50+ games went into OT.  So Markus had to be a scoring machine for more than 40 minutes.  Otherwise, he spends the final minutes of the game on the bench as victory is a lock.

(If you're a Track & Field fan like me, then you know that often when a world record is set, second place, or even third place, often breaks the old record too, or is at least a top ten all-time performance.  They needed second place to challenge them all the way to the line. WRs are not often set with a dominating performance when someone is way out in front alone. (Bolt being an exception)

50 is such an outlier.   I doubt we will ever see it from an MU player again.   So much has to go right.   Having said that, I think Markus may have one more in him.   I doubt he needs it tonight.   It sure would be cool at MSG.

Oh there's so much wrong here.

Three 50 point games, not 2.

November 29th, 2019.  51 points, in 32 minutes, in a 22 point win where we lead by 30, just over 15 minutes into the game, not exactly close.

Markus hitting 50 depends entirely on how hot he is from 3, and how many times he can get to the free throw line.  He has the potential to do that against any team remaining on the schedule.

Markus has the ability to go for 50 any night

I hope you are right. If you are, it means the team is balanced and is playing defense. And, if we're balanced, one would expect we're pretty good.

This is probably one of the least likely games to score 50.  Just because he did it to Providence years ago doesn't mean he's going to do it again years later.  News flash: rosters change in college basketball from year to year.

Providence slows it down, is good defensively, and has length (only one rotational player who's under 6'3") and athleticism at the "guard" positions (actually one of their big issues is they don't really have a lead guard).

Since 52, Howard has averaged just 18 ppg against Providence, shot 20% from 2, 29.4% from 3, and 29.8 eFG%. They will stick length on him all night and be very physical (32 FTA in the 3 games). This probably isn't the night. Love to be wrong.

If I was to tell you back in 2016 that over the next 4 years we would have what would ultimately become the Big East's all time leading scorer what would you have thought the over/under on tournament wins would have been?

I'd say a conservative estimate is 2 while a more aggressive one is 4.  If Markus ever had a big man in the post who could score, that whole offense would have opened up.

JWags85

If Markus got a whistle 50% of the time he got smacked in the lane or inside the arc tonight, he probably gets close. I don't think the reffing cost MU the game, but they let them abuse Markus repeatedly
