Would/Should the NCAA rule the thousands and thousands of dollars that the family of Nathan Bain received via GoFundMe following his last second shot for SFA to beat Duke as an impermissible benefit?

If not, why not just have all players' families set up a GoFundMe page that 'supporters' can contribute to?

Hmm.

I don't know what the GoFundMe is for. Does a family member have cancer and they're trying to pay for it? Is he just going to use it for personal expenses?

The campaign was launched on Sept 17 to help Bain's family recover from hurricane Dorian.  Seems legit.  It was started by the SFA athletic department though, which seems questionable.

It was started by SFA compliance. I'm sure that means they got the all clear from the NCAA.

I'm sure SFA compliance is making sure there are no boosters donating. No reason not to celebrate this as a good cause.

This sounds like a genuine case. It just so happens the kid was given a nice platform to share his story.

The gofundme pages that have the most donations are usually pretty obvious and make sense (hurricane relief, cancer, etc.). Some random Kansas recruit's family being one of the top pages would be really obvious, so I don't think this opens the door for sleazy programs to take advantage of.

This is similar to the account started by Marquette for Tori McCoy, from a compliance standpoint.

I hope the NCAA does a full audit to make sure all of that money is going for only hurricane relief and nothing else.

It's none of the NCAA's business.

I presume none of these GoFundMe donations qualify as 501c (tax deductible), correct?

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Correct.

Say they use the money to take a vacation instead. Would it then be a NCAA violation?

I am sure Chicos can find a doctor to prescribe the vacation.

Like hell it isn't. The thought of that kid making any more money than his scholarship makes me want to puke. It's the NCAA's job to make sure that doesn't happen to protect the sanctity of amateur athletics.

Up to almost $135,000.  Also, just quickly looking at the comments, I saw a couple people specifically identifying themselves as SFA alums.  Let's be honest, before this went viral after the Duke game, I would think that it would have been pretty much exclusively SFA fans.

I really hope the NCAA doesn't get involved in this.  I'm not particularly optimistic.

The ncaa got involved last year with a lesbian cross country runner at Canisius when her family disowned her after coming out...she had no money, no family anymore.  Ncaa permitted the go fund me donations for her under guidelines and monitoring by Canisius because it was a significant life event change.

The problem will arise when people abuse the system...which of course a-holes will do because people being people to scam the system.  That's the unfortunate part and is sure to come which will make it hard for those that are legitimately in need.
