Disney to Buy 21st Century Fox
« on: December 12, 2017, 10:24:29 PM »
Sale includes 22 Regional Fox Sports networks, but not Fox, Fox News, FS1 or FS2. Does this erode the Big East brand or provide focus? Note FS1 and FS2 continue to struggle, but would have likely caused anti-trust issues.

Wonder what will happen to Big East games that are now shown on Fox Regional channels?

I thought Disney was broke.   Damn, that must have been Apple.

"In “When You Dish Upon a Star,” the 5th episode of the series’ (Simpsons) 10th season, which first aired back in November of 1998"

You will be watching AAC games now.

My guess?

This leads to more pirating. Basically, the tv/movie atmosphere prior to streaming netflix.

Murdoch pulled down Iger’s Pants on this.  He get $52 billion for his crap and gets to keep the good stuff.

All the assets are going to Disney to die.

Big East games?  They are destined to be streamed on the Big East Network, like every other college basketball game will be.

Good graphic on what Mickey's footprint will look like now.  Distribution platform is the big play/gamble, getting the loose ends on franchise rights and added content with added technology and controlling interest in Hulu.  Sky/Hotstar have nice potential within UK / India respectively.  Regional sports networks seem like the biggest dud.

This entire post is ludicrous.

These additional channels will be assets for the new Disney streaming channel. Lots of content there.

BE games (both conference and non-con)will continue to be seen on the channels that they currently exist on. FS1, FS2, WSN, CBSSN will still show the games. There is a good chance, IMO, that they could return to ESPN when the current contract is up.

Isn't the in thing to vertically integrate? (the ability to throttle the internet to emphasize your assets has NOTHING to do with this trend)

This makes no sense. Why would someone looking to watch MU hoops tune in to an AAC game instead and be okay with that?

MU is on FS Wisconsin five times this season. Either they move someone else (CBS?), or maybe streaming, or aren't televised.

Because the new owner (Disney) is now going to call it ESPN Wisconsin and they don't own the broadcast rights to Big East basketball...ESPN does own the AAC rights, though.

Fox, Fox News, the Big 10 Network and FS1/2 are still owned by Murdoch...not Disney. Currently, Fox sells some Big East games to CBS, not their major competitor. Will Fox sell Big East games to ESPN?  Maybe but doubtful.

I don't know when the deal takes effect, but Dr. B is correct. Whatever FS Wisconsin will be called in the future will not be allowed to broadcast those games unless Fox sells them the rights.

I know you are correct, but FS Wisconsin will want the games and Fox wants to make money. There is the possibility of selling to someone else, but FSW makes the most sense.

I will be very surprised if they don't get them.

Sports wise though if the deal goes through, it’s basically over. Disney/ESPN owns basically everything and competing with that scale is going to be incredibly hard.
If it goes through, good luck leveraging a big deal when the FS contract is up. I could see it being a case of you’ll take what you get and like it.

I agree with what you write.  This is a clear example of a deal decreasing competition to the point of a monopoly.  It is exactly what should be blocked upon review, but all accounts say the administration is giving this a green light.

Not a good deal for the consumer at all.  Hopefully it doesn't do too much harm to MU.

Keep wishing.  ESPN bought FS Wisconsin for its Brewers and Bucks content. Why would ESPN shell out more $ to pay Fox for MU to highlight a property they don’t own when they have properties they already paid for? More so, why would Fox Sports sell it’s Big East content to ESPN when FS1 or FS2 are already airing it?  Especially when they already have a deal in place with CBS for overflow games?

It will take until 2019 most likely to clear antitrust so you may have a season to go...but you should resign yourself to watching the AAC overflow games on “ESPN Wisconsin” or pony up some cash for FS1/2 channels to watch the Warriors.

It wouldn't be Big East games - they would be non-con.

But you make an excellent point. Why would they sell games to a competitor? If both sides thought the financials were correct, it would happen.

Since when do the consumer's interest matter to the government?
