Best Refs?
« on: March 04, 2017, 07:01:38 AM »
Pomeroy tracks official ratings via a statistical scheme he devised. In all, he lists out 200 active NCAA officials. Roger Ayers was the top official last season and is again near the top in 2017. There are many BE officials on the Top 20 list, how do people feel? This season the BE and ACC formed an alliance which spreads out the officials (I remember getting Higgins three games straight once).

I agree Driscoll has improved over the years and is one of the best, mainly as he very is consistent and lets the players play now (and he has eased on his double technical binge). All of the Providence away officials are down near 50 plus, which I think was the worst reffed game of the year. Teddy Valentine surprises me a bit, as he always seems to take games over at the end. Stephens used to be good, but lately he has fallen to the same sickness as Valentine.

Driscoll gets a lot of crap sometimes, but I think he's pretty good.  He's consistent and I don't feel he's tries to show up players and coaches.  I don't mind when he's working a game.  Valentine on the other hand...

Gaffney may be #13 but he did not distinguish himself when we played SJU at MSG.

Driscoll is still awful.   Never seen a ref so thin-skinned.   He shut down a huge (tight) conference game at MSG a few years ago to throw out a heckler FIFTEEN rows up.   As for the other guys,  I've always thought the rule of thumb is if I know the ref by name, he is a bad ref, i.e Driscoll, Hightower, Higgins, Burr.

Boroski is usually okay. Seen him do a few Big 10 games as well and he was fine. Who was the guy who T'd up Mack in our first game against X? He was horrible.

Thats actually a pretty good measuring stick. If you know the refs by name, odds are its not a good thing. Though I dont think Driscoll is awful, he used to get a ton of MU games thats how I remember him.

NOBODY will be worse than Jim Burr.

Michael Stephens reffed the Marquette-Xavier game this week. He checked in at #11 somehow.

Ed Corbett is probably my least favorite official this season. I honestly didn't pay attention to officials at all this season, but I listed a few games that I remember being officiated terribly (Seton Hall gm 1; Providence ice-rink game) and he was the head official on both.

Glad to see he is not in the Top 20.

However, I also thought Pat Driscoll and his crew were terrible in the 1st Georgetown game (at home) - but he's sitting Top 3.

Apparently they're all bad. Even the good ones.

Driscoll is not good at his job.   Usually I find Michael Stephens to be the best regular BE official, but he had an off game Wednesday at X.  Mike Roberts is also very good at his job.
