I think it should be like the FA Cup which starts with 736 teams. Have the low majors matched up early in the "qualifying rounds," mid-majors start after that, then high majors start in the third or fourth round. Who wants to see Villanova playing Grambling in the first round?

The first six rounds are the Qualifying Competition, from which 32 teams progress to the first round of the Competition Proper, meeting the first of the 48 professional teams from Leagues One and Two. The last entrants are the Premier League and Championship clubs, into the draw for the Third Round Proper.[2] In the modern era, only one non-League team has ever reached the quarter-finals, and teams below Level 2 have never reached the final.[note 1] As a result, significant focus is given to the smaller teams who progress furthest, especially if they achieve an unlikely "giant-killing" victory.

If they were really going to be FA cup style they'd include D2 and D3 teams which id 100% be in favor of, just to see the chaos in the early rounds.

424 D3
312 D2
353 D1

Let's watch the world of CBB burn
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

And then do a League Cup for the D2 and D3 teams.

I have to admit, that sounds like a lot of fun.

I've seen some bad D3 teams in my time, can you imagine matching up Duke with Swarthmore or Kentucky with Olivet College? We might have our first 100 point victory in the NCAA tournament.

I mean I can't imagine those teams would get there. If any of those teams maybe it it'd be the UWSP or UW-WW's of that division. But I'd be more interested in seeing how many low and mid majors lose to top D2 and D3 teams

No question there could be some major blowouts, but mid-to low D1 schools could be susceptible to the better D2 or even D3 schools.

And it isn't as though it would add weeks of blowouts to the tournament. Adding all the D2 and D3 schools gets you to 1089 schools. The current 68-team format requires 6 or 7 games to win it all. Expanding to 1089 schools would require 10 or 11. So it would add all of 2 weekends to include every NCAA team in all 3 divisions.

An idea whose time has not come. Never mind the sheer complexity of a seven week tournament, what do you tell the 100 schools knocked out in week 1--sorry, short season?
They could make this a double elimination tournament.

So if all D1 teams are included, that would be 357 teams (353 from last season + the additions of Bellarmine, Dixie State, Tarleton State, and UC San Diego).

IIRC, new additions to D1 are on a 4 year "probation" before they are eligible for the NCAA tournament. That knocks off seven new additions in the last few years (The 4 added this season, Merrimack, North Alabama, and California Baptist). Finally, Oklahoma State is on a postseason ban. I'm not sure if any other schools have a postseason ban this season.

Assuming the postseason bans apply to the proposed tournament, the would mean a 349 team tournament. Someone smarter than me, what would the most efficient setup be for a 349 team single elimination tournament?

Sorry that last line just reminded me of this classic dril tweet

No, it's not. At least not by Gavitt's statement. The "currently" was not used in the Gavitt statement nor in Katz's tweet, it was only used by the poster you quoted. The statement, to me, read "Coach K, just STFU."

To be fair though, Gavitt did say "at this time." In my haste to post I said "currently," but they pretty much mean the same thing, don't they?

I read his statement as a pretty clear rebuke to K's...err...the ACC's suggestion. The "While all who care about the game are entitled to their opinion, and we'll always listen respectfully" part that came before the "at this time" was a pretty thinly veiled "there's no way in hell we're considering this" response.

I think you're probably right. Just clarifying the part about 'currently/at this time.'

BREAKING: The ACC coaches will propose an all-inclusive NCAA tournament, sources told @Stadium. The coaches just finished the call and voted unanimously on this.
That would be great. All the Wojo wooers will celebrate that he made the dance.

The Big East

Keep the NCAA tournament as is.

Let Everyone else play for the NIT championship. Would be a lot of fun for those teams and their fans. Would be good for college basketball overall. NCAA owns NIT anyway so use this year to test the concept out. If it works it could be a nice revenue stream.
