President for a decade, but he got wrapped up in some political crap that the kids got into on campus.

Hopefully their new President hires a more effective AD?

The article says he also caught a lot of flak for agreeing to the utterly stupid McCormick Place arena deal. That should have been reason enough to can the guy.
Have some patience, FFS.

I agree with this analysis.

Really?  I don't see it mentioned on his Twitter account

"Holtschneider also ran into some resistance on a plan to help fund a new basketball arena near McCormick place, with some students saying the $70 million the school is contributing to the project could be used instead for scholarships."

so "some resistance" from "some students" = "a lot of flak?"

What was my comment again about arguing about the stupidest crap?  Parse my words if you want, but I am sure that "some students" weren't the only one who were against the arena deal. Or at least, let's hope so.

Well you were implying that disapproval over the arena deal was one of the reasons why he is leaving.  But that doesn't seem to be the case at all.  The arena may prove to be a bad idea in the long run, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with this.

What about it was stupid for DePaul?

Stupid for taxpayers, maybe, but seemed like a good deal for DePaul.

To chip in $70 million and still have to pay rent? Yes, a much better deal than the one they turned down, which was to play in the United Center for free.

I suspect the recent PC flap and freedom of speech issues at DePaul were much larger issues than the basketball arena.

Sort of eliminating men's and women's basketball, there were three options for DePaul. Continue to play in the hellhole in Rosemont, which would likely lead to the end of the programs. Move to either the new arena or the UC, the latter of which means you're ion a third position behind the Bulls and Blackhawks. Or, spend about 20x as much and bribe half the Chicago City Council to build a replacement for Alumni Hall in their neighborhood.

Let's be fair here.  They wouldn't be third at the UC behind the Blackhawks and the Bucks; they would also be behind UFC fight night, Disney on Ice, The Ringling Brothers, and Cirque du Soleil.

But still, barring an unimaginable turnaround, is it worth the millions of dollars per year that the alternative is costing them?

There are lots of bad assumptions behind the new arena on both the city and DePaul. I hope it works out. The rent free deal would have been so much better financially. They could literally make a small profit on every game there.

Not sure 3,000 people in a 20,500 capacity arena is the atmosphere you want for your college basketball team.

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of problems with the plan for the new arena. I just don't think the United Center was a good option either. There were no good options.

Me [to my son at a Wolves game (at Allstate)]: "This is where DePaul plays."

My son: "Who?"

Me [to my wife]: "Cancel the Maury show... he's definitely my son."
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.
