Interesting - does the USGA and/or PGA always assign someone to play with the final guy to make the cut when its an odd number? Can the player pick someone?
They give you the option. I don't think the player can pick the person. This happened at the Masters a couple years ago. They assigned McIlroy a member who is a great player and the member actually beat him. McIlroy has since sought course knowledge from that member.

You can say you'd rather play alone, though.

The Masters doesn't give you the option actually.  The guy you reference is Jeff Knox, who has shot 61 at Augusta (member tees) and has played in the Masters several times as a non-competing marker.  He played with Stricker this year.  He has been consulted by many tour pros for course tips at Augusta and has also beaten several big names on that course.
