Former associate athletic director George Koonce has authored a book with two Marquette professors Dr. James A. Holstein, and Dr. Richard S. Jones titled, "Is There Life After Football? Surviving the NFL."  It talks about the different struggles NFL players face after retirement.  They interviewed over 100 former players while writing it.  If you want to read more about it there was a good article in the NY post http://nypost.com/2014/12/14/how-the-nfl-leaves-players-broken-and-broke/ and fox 6 news http://fox6now.com/2014/12/16/marquette-researchers-team-up-with-former-packers-player-to-explore-life-after-football/

Looks informative and thoroughly researched based on the Post article.  Had heard about this when it was still in progress; isn't this Koonce's PhD work?  Remember seeing him around taking night classes back in the '07-'08 time frame.

Yeah he did his dissertation on it at Marquette here's an article from 2012 http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/19053496/expacker-koonce-gives-inside-look-at-player-trauma-transitions

Concussions and the NFL is a big topic right now but this book goes beyond that and brings up some issues retired players face that people might not normally think about.  Its a good read if your at all interested in the NFL and some of the issues players have after retirement.
