On Bill Simmons's podcast with Al Michaels this week, he mentioned Doc had some sort of race problem at Marquette. First I had heard of anything.  I googled and found this article:  http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2014-04-28/sports/os-sterling-clippers-doc-rivers-brian-schmitz-0429-20140428_1_kris-campion-hank-raymond-freshman-basketball-star

Anybody on campus then that remembers this?  Also, awesome Hank story.

This was discussed at length here on Scoop four (?) years ago.  My signature line used to be a quote from Doc about the house fire.

Kris' former boyfriend was Marc Marotta.  Kris and Doc became an item when Marc was out of town.  Marotta felt stabbed in the back and was quite po'd.  Could still be for all I know.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Uh, that's not all. Marquette is largely homogeneous white middle class Catholic. A white woman dating a black man was not accepted by everyone in the Marquette community back then. I respect Rivers for staying above the ignorance of the few and seeing the good in the whole. His continued contributions to Marquette are to his great credit.

It was a little bit of both.   Stealing a friend's girlfriend is bad enough.  (Yes, I know they lived happily ever after)   There is no way to avoid friction within the locker room when a girl is involved.    At the time, in the early 80's, interracial dating was not universally accepted.    So, yes, there was a racist element to some of the friction.
Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

It is better to be fearless and cheerful than cheerless and fearful.

The surprise to me in that article was the comment from Jeremiah. If that's original then that kid is truly wise beyond his years. Even if he picked it up from some source, but lives it, it's still pretty damn impressive.

That sumbitch had the double burden of being both a Harvard and a Michigan grad. Little wonder he flipped out. Never, ever trust anyone carrying that cross...

I've heard of strong men running that gauntlet finding themselves reduced to writing haiku and posting pictures of female members of the IDF...

It often comes down to haikus or pipe bombs. It just depends on what one had for dinner the night before...

IIRC Doc and Marc were roomies-that's how Chris got to know Doc while dating Marc.  I used to see her waiting for Marc after games outside the licker room.  That summer Marc went to DC to serve as a Congressional aide, and Chris was already friendly with Doc.
Bit of a surprise for Marc when he got home.  Hard feelings are understandable.

It probably hurt Marotta quite a bit, but he appears to be doing quite well for himself, so he was able to get over it.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

Perhaps the pain of that rejection is what put him on the trajectory that ended with him building the Versailles of  Mequon.

Yes that was what I was referring to--the Taj Mahal of the Milwaukee metro area. And Marotta probably has a trophy wife, although I do not know for sure.

Maybe it's because of the boring, annoying "traditional" SHEET that we keep bringing up
