I know the board likes the opportunity to jump off the cliff at times, but there is absolutely no guarantee that Wojo (or a former Duke player/coach) will get the opportunity to replace Coach K once he decides to retire.

When Bill Cowher decided to retire from the Steelers, after 15 years as head coach and a two Super Bowl appearances (one win), the candidates were two Steelers connections (Whisenhunt and Grimm) and an outside candidate (Tomlin).  Tomlin ended up being chosen.

When Denny Crum left Louisville, it was an A-list college head coach to replace him (Pitino), not a former assistant.

Heck, when John Wooden retired from UCLA, they hired Gene Bartow (who had no previous connections whatsoever to Wooden or UCLA) from Illinois of all places.

In other situations where big-time schools decided to hire a former player/assistant coach to replace a legendary head coach, it almost always ends in failure.  Matt Doherty (UNC), Mike Davis (Indiana), Craig Esherick (Georgetown), etc.

I would wager a guess that Duke will go after either Stevens or Smart for the position, once it opens up in 5 years.
