So because the players are forced to be in college for a year, they're not allowed to compete against the "traditionals"?

Because that team offers them playing time, development, and championships, in exchange for the fact that everyone knows they will only be there a year. Calipari offers a brand that appeals to a lot of guys that would rather go straight to the NBA in the first place. The booster "incentives" and being at a blue blood certainly help, though.
