Al immediately came to my mind as well.

IMHO, Buzz has earned an NIT season (or even no postseason). He's given us enough memories and results to give him a pass. Do I like it? No. Will I tolerate it? Of course. It will take a lot for Buzz to lose my benefit of the doubt. He could lose every other this game this year and he'd still have it.

In Buzz we slurp.

Is it any coincidence that our upperclassmen are the only hard workers?

They are simply more experienced.

Wow, what would it take.....? Say seven NC's in six years? Would that do it? I'm not too happy about  the way things have gone so far but honestly, who would you like to see as coach?

You do know we won by 10, right? More than what Georgetown beat them by the way.

If buzz puts together some nit seasons then his quirky incoherent press conferences his quaint life lessons, his paint touches, switchables and rewarding hard workers over results will wear thin very fast. The guy seems pretty full of himself. Which works fine when he wins. But the hey look at me I'm wearing a bow tie mentality wont fly in nit years

Incoherent press conference? Only to the extremely dense.

I've come to realize you just have an innate desire to complain.  Do you get excited when watching a game?  I bet you just point out every flaw in the tournament instead of enjoying Marquette's runs.

We'll win the tournament some time and he'll complain we lost a game back in December or didn't have a top ranked big to help us there.

This whole discussion has made me think of Al again also.  We had a lot of controversy 35+ years ago on why one of the top high school studs (Bernard Toone) was a backup to a moderately skilled, hard working local upperclass kid (Bill Neary).  BT was a far higher recruit than JJJ, Bane, or Dawson.  Al stuck with Neary, and his overachieving efforts and results, and it paid off for the entire team and university.

Now, I understand that times change.  I also understand this is no '77 team.  But since I was at MU way back when, I've gained the experience that, unless you have an absolute Stud or Rainmaker or whatever you want to call it, a leader is far better off trusting and rewarding the hardest workers.  If you don't, you risk losing the entire team.

I have no insight into the work and practice habits of the various players.  But if you believe just a little bit of Buzz's words that JT, DW and others work harder than the others, and you put that into perspective of the results we've been blessed to have since Buzz took over, I would suggest that even when we disagree, we need to give the coach the benefit of the doubt on what's best in the long term interest of the team.

my apologies. i got a little confused by the wording there mentioning derrick and gardner.

overall, i took away, again, that the guys who work the hardest will get the most minutes. i wish posters here understood that and just shut up because buzz isn't going to change his methods no matter what they think. derrick works harder than dawson. jake works harder than jjj. just accept it. and it's not about not being able to question the coach, it's about the repeated bitching here over and over again.

Your statement is idiotic. did you see any of the games that DG and Mayo play in? Do you see what happens when Jamil, DG and Mayo are on the court? Maybe we can't change Buzz's mind but the proof is in the final analysis,  Winning !

Good stuff and very apropos. Of course, BT was a knucklehead in so many ways back then (I had a class with him as well as observing his basketball talents.) I hope JJJ is not a distant relative!

Agree.  Doesn't mean we can't think he's doing everything perfectly when things aren't working in the 80 minutes we see of his 80 hour work week, but it's not the end of the world to let him work through it.  Every once in a while nothing works - doubt Nova fans are still peeved at Clooney for their 2012 season.

And this is different from what other coach?

Bruce Weber took Illinois to within a bucket of the NCAA title but was run out of town a few years later when the team didn't win enough. Bobby Knight was tolerated when he was getting to the Final Four but when the recruits stopped coming, Indiana was looking for excuses to dump him. Texas can't wait to get rid of Rick Barnes. Both Kentucky and Minnesota got tired of Tubby. Etc., etc., etc.

Every coach is wonderful when he wins and suspect when he loses. The very fans who bitch about Crean being disloyal for going to Indiana would have had no problem giving Crean the boot if he had a few bad years in a row. Hell, Buzz is having a bad half-season after going S16-S16-E8 and some folks here think he miraculously has morphed into the village idiot.

My statement is not idiotic. My statement is merely the facts. Buzz plays the hardest working guys. Period. He's said it probably dozens of times. And he's shown it in his choices of playing time. What are you even talking about? This has nothing to do with which players are successful or how the team wins. This has everything to do with which players play based on buzz's philosophy. Get a clue.

I believe that Buzz thinks that the hardest workers are the ones most likely to get us to win games. That's his philosophy.

And it's not a crazy philosophy. If people want to see a talented team that doesn't work hard, simply take a look east at St. John's.

Every year I seem to hear about how St. John's has a bunch of beasts on their roster and they're the sleeping giant in New York City. But almost every time I see them on TV, they're one of those teams that can look like a team of future lottery picks, or a team of sixth-graders; sometimes in the same game. The results are consistent. St. John's has been to the NCAA Tournament only 5 times since 1993-94, and other than an Elite 8 Run in 1999 with Ron Artest, never got past the first weekend.

No one is entitled to a starting spot, or minutes because of perceived "talent." Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.

To me there's no doubt that buzz is playing a long game here.  If the 5 that finished the game can continue to play the way they did in the second half, he's got CO on board and that works sometimes, all he needs is one or two of JA, JJJ, or Deonte to "get it" and we have a 7 or 8 man rotation good enough to beat anyone.  It's not there yet, but we saw glimpses of what it can be like.

Deonte looks like he's closest to getting it but even my 9 year old pointed out at the game yesterday how bad his defense was.  He's almost OK in a man, lost in the zone.  His high school coach must have been useless.

When we finally got the lead with about 6 minutes to go. I was thinking last's year team would win this game, but I am not sure this team. I am still not sure about this team. However, I am sure about DePaul with the game on the line they took poor shots and had three straight turnovers. To me it was more about DePaul self-destructing than MU taking this game. However, a win streak starts with the first win.
