I don't think anyone here is singling out this kid for being stupid.  If anything, the comments are a testament that most, if not all, of us have been stupid, drunken college students at some point... heck, I'll be amongst to first to admit that I've done stupider stuff than walk along a 65' wall.  But unless you're an atheist, I wouldn't go looking for disrespect in our merely reflecting on how fortunate some of us were.

This.

Any of us that are parents, and especially those with teenagers, I know we cringe at times.  I remember the stupid stuff I did and hope my kids won't do the same, or be lucky enough not to pay the price as a result.

Prayers to the family.

Hey guys.

New poster on here.  I was fortunate enough to consider Keith to be one of my friends.  He lived on the same floor as me in McCormick during freshmen year, and he was one of the first people I became friends with at Marquette.  He was a great kid, very caring for everyone, and loved to make everyone laugh.  Based on the response from everyone that knew him, he was very well-loved by everyone.

Please keep Keith and his family in your thoughts and prayers, as well as the people that were in Italy with him.  Just absolutely tragic that this happened, and it goes to show how fragile life truly is.

Well said, maestro.

As horrible as it seems to say this, he was careless, on that night at least.

Spare us the santimony. He died. This isn't the time to
point out what should or shouldn't have happened. It is horrible for you to say that. Have some respect.

By saying it on a message board it's not having respect. Maybe others can learn from this, so it doesn't happen again.

Really regretted that last meal

This is what I'm referring to in the first post ... This is a funny picture and nothing wrong with posting it on Facebook.  However, it is now one of his last images of him alive and in papers in Italy and the US forming the impression strangers of have him.

I'm guessing that his family would argue this picture is not the image the world should have of him.

Honestly, why not.  To me it shows a kid who has a sense of humor, that enjoys life and isn't afraid to have fun.  His life was tragically cut too short.  My prayers are with his family and friends.

Ultimately, though a lighthearted picture of me enjoying life and a sense of humor would be a perfectly fine way for everyone to remember me by.

This is what his profile picture is on Facebook.  Luckily I haven't seen a goofy picture with me in it as well, but yes it seems like certain articles have been using the most ridiculous pictures they can find.  Keith was not a typical obnoxious frat bro either, and I guess the kind of pictures they are finding just show how goofy and fun he was without caring if people thought he was weird.

Except he died while trying to tightrope a 65 foot wall while drunk.  So I agree with you about what the picture portrays, given the circumstances, I don't think I want to reinforce them image of goofing around too much.

Again, I believe he was a good kid that had a horrible thing happen.  But the circumstances, and that picture, I fear it will reinforce an unfair image of him ... An irresponsible kid behaving recklessly in Italy.

I hope I'm wrong.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess his parents aren't sitting somewhere thinking, "if only he'd had a more appropriate Facebook picture...maybe something with a tie...what must people be thinking of him?!"

I'm guessing it hasn't crossed their mind in their grief. There are no words for what they're going through. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

I've seen plenty of regrettable Facebook pictures. That isn't one of them. Goofy and fun...yes. As a parent of a boy about his age, I really don't understand the issue with that picture.

If this happened to my son (God forbid), who is only one year older, and this was the last picture taken of him....I would laugh and snicker every time I saw it.  Especially since it apparently captures his personality so well.

Sometimes people go out of their way to overthink things.

Agree wholeheartedly.  It's not a funeral pic, it's a pic that people can remember more than just looks with.  You can see personality in it, and that's important as the years go by.

It seems his friends will remember and miss the smiles he brought their lives. What better legacy than those pictures and the fine things they and Fr. Pilarz have said about him.  Whether 18 or 81 we have limited time and I consider it great he spent his time enjoying that life.  RIP

It is a translation of Italian.  Keep that in mind.

As the pictures accompanying the article show, and from personally walking that same stretch, the wall is quite high on one side, but only apparently knee or waist high along via lungotravere dei tebaldi.   Horrible mistake with tragic consequences.
