If I missed a post on this, I apologize. But after a search, I didn't see anything, so here goes. The Big East coaches announced their preseason player of the year and all-conference teams. Here are the players:

Player of the Year: Peyton Siva, (Louisville)

First Team: Vincent Council (Prov), Sean Kilpatrick (Cincy), Otto Porter (Georgetown), Jack Cooley (ND), Gorgui Dieng (Louisville)

Second Team: Shabazz Napier (UConn), Brandon Triche ('Cuse), Anthony Collins (USF), D'Angelo Harrison (St. John's), Cleveland Melvin (DePaul)

Honorable Mention: Trevon Woodall (Pitt), Jerian Grant (ND), Chane Behanan (Louisville), CJ Fair ('Cuse)

Rookie of the Year: Steven Adams (Pitt)

Okay...my issue with this isn't that there are no Marquette players listed. Though I think Jamil Wilson and Trent Lockett are at least as deserving as anyone on the HM list, I can live with this. And it isn't that it is such a guard-heavy list, though there are some worthy forwards that could have been mentioned.

My issue is that Peyton Freaking Siva is preseason POY. What the hell?!? Did the coaches only watch the Big East Tournament last year? Siva isn't worthy of POY honors. He isn't worthy of first team honors. He isn't even worthy of honorable mention. The guy is a turnover machine and averages 3.5 turnovers per game. He scored less than 10 ppg, so it's not like he lit it up ala Council. While he got assists, his assist to turnover ratio was 1.55/1. For a primary ballhandler, that may not be awful, but it's pretty damn bad. Consider this: Vincent Council, Junior Cadougan, Shabazz Napier, Brandon Triche, and Cashmere Wright, all returning point guards, all had a A/T ratio of over 2.0. Even lowly DePaul's Brandon Young mustered a 1.96.

Siva isn't a bad player, but he doesn't deserve to be mentioned for POY on his own team, much less the entire league. If you look at Value Add, Siva is only the fifth most valuable player on his own team! In terms of the Big East, he comes in at #37.

Rick Pitino said "If there's a better point guard in America I want to see him." Rick, I'd say there are probably about 30-40 better point guards in America. Siva is about as elite as my underwear.

Bocephys

I hate to say it, but I think we're going to need to see your underwear.

This is like preseason polls, they are all made up lists that bears little resemblance to what actually happens.  By Thanksgiving we'll all see that they are wrong (both this list and the preseason poll).

Besides, what was last year's preseason list?  Anyone have Jae of PoY?

Jae wasn't even honorable mention last year.

Jae wasn't even honorable mention last year.

So Jamil Wilson is perfectly positioned to be PoY!!

Dawson Rental

Vincent Council may be the best floor leader in the Big East, but his shooting is terrible, just slightly better than Junior's.  Of course, he takes a lot more shots which probably isn't a good thing for Providence.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Stronghold

I think the issue with Lockett may be many coaches wouldn't vote in a 3 year transfer from a different conference.

Rudy

They all saw what we saw in the Big East Tournament. Siva was able to get into the paint regularly and it caused havoc for the defensive team. If he puts a season together with anywhere near what he did in the Big East Tourney, I can see him being POY.

But that's the exact problem. The only time he had even 4 games like that in a row was the BET. He didn't have near that consistency for the entire tournament. Anyone thinking that he's going to play like that for an entire season is out of their mind. He's given no indication over his career that he can consistently play like that. None whatsoever. Even once they got to the NCAAs he didn't play near that well, but it was overshadowed because as a team they got to the Final Four.
