OK, I can't resist! The point I made was that if we become the North Carolina of the Midwest and develop a strong core following, the J-S will cover us like the dew (or the frost!). In the Louisville Courier-Journal's case, look who they are covering. The three teams in question -- Indiana, Louisville and Kentucky -- are three legitimate contenders for the NCAA National Basketball Championship. If you believe the pre-season hype (and I don't), you may have the Nation's 1, 2 and 3 ranked teams either in Louisville or within 150 miles of Louisville.

If Marquette, Wisconsin and, say, DePaul all were competing for the NCAA Champions with substantial numbers of players from the State of Wisconsin, all three would be front-page news in the J-S. Period. No argument!

DePaul would be front page news in the J/S if it was (preseason) competing for the NCAA championship with a substansial number of Wisconsin players? Period, no argument? I disagree, but even if you're right, your analogy is poor. How many of Indiana's players come from Kentucky? Any of them?

Except they are also covering Kentucky and Indiana craptacular football, and all school's volleyball, swimming, soccer, et al as well. End of argument!

As provincial as Wisconsin is, if ANYBODY was competing for the national championship with a substantial number of Wisconsin bred players, they'd be J-Sl news. But the point of my argument was that if we had three teams within 100 to 150 miles of Milwaukee ranked among the five or six best NCAA teams in the country and playing with Wisconsin-bred talent, the J-S would cover it. Period. The J-S probably would cover something like that, no matter where the players were coming from.

To the second commenter, if UW and Marquette were both in the Top 3 teams in the country, it would be front page news in the J-S almost every darn day, I don't care where the players are from. Same for DePaul. If J.S. Tokato played for DePaul and turned them around, the J-S would feature DePaul prominently. Period.

But you're still comparing what the J/S might do if DePaul was a championship contender playing with Wisconsin guys to what a Louisville paper does do to a school 100 miles away with NO Kentucky players on the roster. Bad analogy. Period.

Uhh, Lenny, I understand where you're coming from but consider this. Louisville is a border city and a modest but notable part of the region's population is in Southern Indiana. Like Kentucky, Southern Indiana is basketball mad and the red and white they love often has script other than "Louisville" on it. To my original point, if a significant part of the J-S' circulation followed DePaul, there would be coverage. That following could be because perhaps there was Wisconsin-bred talent on DePaul or for whatever reason.

To go back to the original comments, the fact remains that the J-S' readers don't want wall-to-wall coverage of the Warriors. They want mush on the Packers, Badgers football and Brewers. The Bucks are an afterthought until they get good again (if they ever do) and Marquette is an interest in-season when we're good. Let us become a Top 5 team and things will change. Until then, no chance.

Agreed.

DePaul might as well be in Colorado, as far as the JS (and its readers) are concerned.

Bruce Murphy lists off the people who are leaving the JS..

Tom Enlund .. Laurel Walker .. Eugene Kane, all gone.  Michael Hunt will no longer write a column, now just a sports reporter.

Wow.  Remind me why I still have a 7 day a week subscription again?

The answer for me is the bag the paper comes in is perfect for dog droppings.

Edit to correct grammar.

because they sell 7 day subs for less than they bill me for 2 days + my local Greenfield paper?

If you cut out the coupons, the paper is just about free.

Yikes. Although... I'm one who was never a fan of Walker. Then, again I've known her for years as I grew up with her kids, so I may have an unfair bias there...
Relax. Respect the Process.

I may actually subscribe now that Eugene Kane is gone.

What's sad is the paper used to easily pay for itself many times over just on Sundays. Even in college, a Sunday paper could save me $20-30 off my grocery bill, and I remember my dad saving upwards of $50 every 2 weeks from coupons. Now, if you find more than $5 of truly worthwhile coupons in the Sunday paper, you're doing pretty well. It's all coin collections, rehashed infomercial ads, and crap no one wants. I have a feeling that a significant decline in useful coupons over the past 3-4 years has hurt subscriptions as much as anything.

Nope...more that as people get coupons off the web, the less valuable the JS becomes.

Spotcheck Billy

it seems like all of the coupons in the Sunday paper also come in the mail every week anyway

Lori Nickel won't you please come home!!!!  She gave some excellent coverage to some crappy teams.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
