No, I don't think that was the problem.  Buzz traveled to New Jersey to try to keep Taylor around.  He released Williams immediately....never went to Alabama to lobby to keep him.  I think he realized Williams wasn't the player he wanted.

We were actually oversigned by one at the end of the 2008 season, so Buzz wasn't merely looking for  warm bodies. 

Couple that with the strong probablility that Buzz knew on the day he was promoted that he wanted Jimmy Butler.  Everyone seems to forget that he was a teammate of Joe Fulce at Tyler.  I have to think that as Buzz watched Fulce's games and spoke with Joe, he learned quite a bit about Jimmy Butler.

However, to bring Butler onto the roster, he had to clear two scholarships. He was content to let Scott Christopherson (to bring us down to 13) and Nick Williams (to make room for Butler) go.

Taylor's own comments at the time were that he felt closer to Buzz than anyone on the staff and suggested that he may still come to MU was if Buzz was named coach.  I'm sure that gave Buzz a certain level of confidence that he'd be successful at keeping Taylor on board.
