In my mind was the technical on Wayns.  I don't know what he said and given the way the rest of the game was called who knows if he deserved it but it took away what looked like a stop from VU (the OB call was contested as well), let us move it past a one possession lead after the free throws and gave Wayns his forth.  If I was VU I would have some serious questions about that call at home.  Any way a great win

MuMark

From the replay I saw it sure looked like it went off a Nova player.

He cursed according to the ESPN write up.......that ref had a short fuse. Just can't lose control like that in a close game.

This also might have played into the call.

Throw in the T called against Wayns, and it was clear officials were paying attention after they were put on notice this week by John Adams, the national coordinator of men's basketball officiating. He posted a memo stating officials have done a "poor job" dealing with bad sportsmanship "committed by players, substitutes, and bench personnel, including head coaches." "You should have a very low tolerance for players who use profanity towards officials or who "wave you off" after a call etc.," he wrote. "These types of actions call for technical fouls. Call them! Your coordinators and commissioners will support you."

It was an absolute power move by the ref. In the slow motion replay, Wayns' back was turned to the camera but he definitely said something. But you could see the refs head whip around and he called him for a T. It was completely personal, in my opinion.

And refs need to realize that in the heat of the moment, this stuff happens. To get Td up in a huge situation because someone "waves you off" or uses profanity...please.

If this had happened to MU the boards would be going crazy, and for good reason.

Slim

Maybe he called him "Chicos"

The NCAA sent a memo this week telling officials to call T's on coaches and players that whatever....(cross the line, complain, swear, etc...etc...)

I consider it an equalizer for Buzz falling over.....LOL!

Wayans said what he said ...Realized it....turned back at the official.....and he got T'ed up right in his grill......

Maalik Wayns could not believe the call. The Villanova guard was convinced a ball knocked off a Marquette player and went out of bounds, giving the arrow to the Wildcats.

Nope, Marquette ball. Wayns yelled a profanity and was whistled for a technical foul.
...
Villanova got the lead back to four points until Wayns used profanity after what he thought was a blown call. The official looked straight at him, made the "T" signal and the game changed from there.

"I didn't touch the ball at all," Wayns said. "I just reacted. I didn't say anything disrespectful to the ref. I don't know what caused the tech. He called it, so it is what it is."

----

In this case it was the correct call.

burger

The replay clearly showed that the ball went off his leg.....

Loser and liar to boot.....

GGGG

Like I said when DJO got a technical last year at Georgetown, profanity is automatic.  He deserved it.

MerrittsMustache

The ball clearly went off him and, for all we know, he could have been jawing at the refs the whole game. What looked like a quick whistle may have been an on-going issue.

mu_hilltopper

The replay also showed the ref hesitated.  If you watch his hands, they started to come together for the "T" .. then he relaxed .. then he T'd him up.    It was as if the ref was going to let it go, then he remembered the memo.

dwaderoy2004

Agreed topper... I thought the exact same thing.

What about the awful call on DJO's foul and the subsequent Tech on buzz for tripping. MU would have had the ball down six and instead they're down 10. Big big play in first half. The officiating was as bad as I've seen this year.

The hack of Ox that led to our panic was for sure a foul.  The officials were just terrible today.  And surprisingly, Hightower wasn't in this crew.
Relax. Respect the Process.

Don't know about the T, but it was awfully quick.

That said, Wayns should have gotten his 4th foul for what he did on that play.  It should have been a foul.  They were lucky it was called out of bounds on them.

Maybe he called the ref something that GUARANTEES a TECH.

Disagree, it's an automatic call if you use profanity while starring at a ref from a few feet away.

I understand your point of view, but I have to say you are wrong on the board blowing up if it was MU, because the exact same thing happened to us and the board didn't blow up.  DJO hit a big three against Gtown last year and we were on a roll, and suddenly he got teed up heading back down the court.  Our boards didn't blow up, as I recall everyone just asked what had been said.  So if DJO gets the automatic T for using a profanity while running back down the court, or course you get a T for saying one looking at the ref.

It was actually pretty funny, because as I recall DJO said, "I said 'Count It'" and Jimmy Butler laughed and said, "Oh he said another word after "count it.'"

Looked to me pretty obvious that the ball was knocked right off his thigh and out of bounds, so i believe it was the right call all around.

in my mind, Jay Wright screams at the refs for an entire half and they are very patient to only give him one technical.  Buzz falls down - confirmed by a Villanova official, and gets a technical.

Yes, it was the key turning point in the game, but I certainly don't think we came out ahead on any of these calls.
The www.valueaddsports.com analysis of basketball, football and baseball players are intended to neither be too hot or too cold - hundreds immerse themselves in studies of stats not of interest to broader fan bases (too hot), while others still insist on pure observation (too cold).

I just watched the replay on DVR.  It was obviously off of Wayns.

He made up for it quickly, with that T foul becoming his 4th personal.

Many on this board called DJO's technical bogus.

Not that I'm trying to prove it was a bad T or really anything. I just found this article interesting http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/46385/tough-wins-for-marquette.

She said that Wayn's "profanity" was a 1 on the scale of offensiveness.

Brewtown Andy

Ken Pomeroy's Win Probability chart for the game has the 4 point swing for MU off the Wayns' technical as roughly a 17 point shift in MU's favor. From above 66% in Nova's favor to about 51% in MU's favor.
