Marquette as popular as Syracuse in NYC?

From a Syracuse fan. What surprises me most is how little MSG actually drew.

While I'm also surprised by the low turnout in general at the MSG, this really isn't a fair way to compare the popularity of the respective programs. First, the Syracuse games were on either side of Thanksgiving Day. Second, what the comparison of the number in attendance really says that there is more support for MU/Nova/Mizzou/UWash than there is for Cuse/VaTech/Stanford/OkSt since these were doubleheaders where the fans are paying for both games. Given that the Jimmy V classic had two Big East teams as opposed to one, I actually would have expected more a mere additional 500 fans.

MSG really emptied out at halftime of our game.  All the Mizzou and Nova fans left.

It also was getting a little late for a weeknight by halftime.  Anyone with a kid in school was probably leaving by half.  If you had to work the next day and catch a subway, you better get moving or if you just wanted to catch a subway home with normal people, it was time to get going for a tuesday night.

Kind of like how the crowd for the Washington-Duke game disappeared before the Pitt-Oklahoma State game in MSG this weekend.

If there were 3,000 people in that arena at the final buzzer of the MU-UW game, I'd be absolutely stunned.

Hell, I didn't even have to raise my voice for Buzz to hear me cheering.

The first game was like a Mizzou home game, although clearly Nova didn't give their fans much to cheer about. The second game was more even, with respect to the game itself and the fans' support. Perhaps an edge to Washington. Overall, the crowd was disappointing - virtually all of the seats at either end, as well as most of the balconies, went unsold (or at least were unoccupied). Bottom line, the MU support did not stand out as being overly prominent.

That's awful. I know it was late, but that was maybe the most entertaining second half played in any game this season. No lead larger than 5 (and that within the first 30 seconds of the half) and 17 or 18 lead changes, along with a few ties in there too? Jeez...I'd stick around to watch VMI play UC Irvine if I could get that kind of entertainment.

I expected the Mizzou fans to make an early exit but thought some Nova fans would stick around. They bolted. Quick. Granted, their team is awful by their standards this season but you figured since you'll be playing Marquette in three weeks maybe spending an extra hour watching them wouldn't be so bad.

One good thing was the atmosphere, though low on numbers, was high on collegiality. All the UW fans I ran into and talked with were great and it seemed like both fanbases were just happy to see a great game. Rare nowadays you get that.

Mine was $75 for both games and I sat in the fifth row. In NYC, that's a pretty good price. More likely, it's the Tuesday night that hurts the neutral.
