I'm not smart enough to figure out who was donating enough money.  Can someone spell it out for this dummy?

I think we're talking about Casino $$.

How much money could Marquette have received?  Anyone know what those donations looked like?

I have to believe the cost/benefit analysis of changing the name back to Warriors would outweigh any previously received money.

Also, there is a new President coming in that is now two generations removed from DiUlio.  Frankly, I think a new president is good timing to re-introduce the Warrior debate.  I already have a half-written, "Welcome to Marquette, Fr. Pilarz.  Please change the nickname back to Warriors" post ready for Cracked Sidewalks.

If it a legal agreement, the possibility of geting sued is real and should be avoided.  And the incoming President is beholden to any agreement, even it was made 100 years ago.

I have no real knowledge of that, I just concluded that based on the hints in that old thread.
The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture.

It's always a great time to bring up this embarrassment. To this DAY the media STILL calls us the Warriors! Why? Because the change made sense to absolutely NOBODY! Every time somebody says "Golden Eagles" nationally, you can almost hear the snickering. It's a complete joke.

OK, how 'bout this:

Officially drop the "Golden Eagles" nickname.  Go forward purely as "Marquette" with no nickname.  There is not an eagle to be found on any basketball gear or uniform.  Continue to use the "MU" logo.  Then we, as fans and alumni (and the media), can continue calling the teams the Warriors with implicit approval from the university administration.  Officially, there is no nickname and no endorsement of anything offensive to anyone.

Canned Goods n Ammo

Hilltoppers.

The name was changed at the drop of a hat to "Warriors" for no real good reason, so it's it bit hypocritical for people to claim that as the "rightful" name.

I know that's going to get a bunch of you older gentlemen cranky, but it needs to be said.

The PC vs non-PC stuff is just smoke if we are actually talking about what the name "should" be.

Is it bigger than a breadbasket?  What's the exposure here?
A warrior is an empowered and compassionate protector of others.

Blackhat

I would think the tribe would make it a "you want this donation and future donations please change your name" type deal if they were indeed offended as BMA alludes.

Skatastrophy

Sweet 16 game tomorrow and we're talking about this again? :(

If we lose it will the curse of the golden eagle.....

Not just "change your nickname," but "name it after one of our clans."

Just be thankful we're not the Marquette Gnews.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

our mascot could be an indian with multiple beaver skins strapped over his back.

Stone Cold-
Between the Scoop and I, I would personally love to see the mascot you laid out but we do need to be sensitive to all the members in the community. At the end of the day, despite how neat that mascot would be for us die hard fans, we cannot run the risk of alienating possible undergrads or offending the greater community.

Probably a waste of time... but if I had time to kill in d/t Milwaukee, I'd go to the courthouse & run an abstract on the title to the Valley Fields to see if there's is anything unusual attached to the property.  I wouldn't expect to find a smoking gun, but would halfway expect there to be at least be a notation referring to a document that might have some details.

I'm just thinking creatively... I have no clue what the deal was re: the nickname change.  All I know is that there's a few pieces that point to involvement by the fire keepers to the south.

I always hated the name Golden Eagles until I saw a Golden Eagle thing on Planet Earth. They are bad ass. Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VklTs-Tid_I

With that said, I voted Warriors.

Never wrestle with a pig.  You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.

Jesus the day before a Sweet 16 game and this thread is posted. Really?

Jim officiated at my wedding.  Surprised us all going Jesuit.  Now he's at UCLA in film school, making movies for god.  (???)

MUEng92

Did he work at the BMU or AMU?  I am trying to pin down how I know him.

Spaniel with a Short Tail

I also can't believe this got resurrected the night before our big game.  However, if it pushed the "Buzz to OU" posts away from the top of MUScoop, then maybe it has some redeeming value.

That being said, though I'm a Warrior, I went with Hilltoppers.  Warriors isn't coming back, and it's better than Golden Eagles because I'm against shared nicknames and several schools already had GE before MU adopted it.  Hilltoppers has some history with us.

GO MARQUETTE!!!

GGGG

My recollection is that he did work for BMU.
