Thought this thread was going to be about ZFB. Dude loves Dick.
"Give 'Em Hell, Al"

He is too busy honking Duke's and Pitino's tonk.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

Plenty of opportunity to make a name as we play 10 of those teams (Duke, Gonz/KState, Wisco, Nova, Cuse, Pitt, L'Ville, St. Johns, West Va, G'Town)

inspired by the thread title...

"The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was set in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was Mary's first real acting job since leaving the "Dick van Dyke Show". The show about a single woman's struggle to find happiness in the big city was originally titled "Life Without Dick", but that was changed for some reason.

By coincidence, this is also the title of the upcoming Lifetime movie about ZFB's life.

7 Big East teams in his top 40, putting us no higher than 8th.  Ouch..  St John's should be improved, but not sure I'm putting them ahead of us...

Agreed, count me in the "I dont get all St. John's love" crowd.

Also, good thread title Chicos.
“All men dream; but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act out their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.” - T.E. Lawrence

I buy the love.....not for Dick but for St. John's.  Think they will be a NCAA team this year.

+1

I'd rather be in the top 40 (hopefully better  ;D) at the end of the year, rather than the beginning.
The "average fan" is an idiot.

TallTitan34

Agreed.  UNC and UCONN were in the Top 10 at the begining of last year and how did that work out?

You mean those preseason prognosticators weren't accurate (and actually aren't about 55% of the time)...do tell.   ;)

Slim

Curious - where was Butlet preseason last year?

Butler was 11th in one poll and 10th in the other preseason last year.

They screwed the pooch naming these schools to the top 25 (let alone all the ones that ended up finishing there that weren't ranked...i.e Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, Maryland, etc, etc)

North Carolina
Michigan
UCONN
Louisville
Illinois
Minnesota
Washington
California
Tennessee
Oklahoma
Dayton
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Mississippi State
Etc

Screwed the pooch is a poor term to use there.  Some of those teams they really did miss on, but others made the NCAA tourney and weren't really that far outside the top 25 at the end of the season.  Clemson was ranked 24th preseason and finished 21-11 as a 7 seed.  Others ran into situations (injuries, off-court trouble, coach's health, whateveer) that you can't really expect the analysts to forsee at the beginning of the season.  For that matter, even though Tennessee went through a lot of craziness last season, they don't belong on your list at all.

ChicosBailBonds

My point is the preseason top 25 is nothing more than licking your finger and sticking it up in the air.  The preseason top 25 misses badly most years from the final top 25.  It's fun to look at, fans dig it, etc, but it shouldn't be used as any type of judge of what a team will be like that season.  Most of these voters have no f'ing clue what they are voting on.

dsfire

That's why they play the games.  It doesn't matter that much whether they know what they're talking about or not; there's just too much stuff that happens during the season to be able to map out the ending top 25 half a year in advance.

That said, it doesn't mean pre-season polls are worthless.  It's a discussion starter for which teams are the best which then evolves throughout the season.  Just isn't worth bragging about a top 10 pre-season ranking.

AP Poll always contains a few yahoos (google: Jon Wilner), but for the most part, they usually do a decent job of ranking teams by the first week or two of March.

The coaches poll... another story.  Usually it's an assistant or graduate student filling out the weekly ballot.  I would bet most coaches don't even know what the ballot looks like.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

We agree that the AP poll is better than the coach's poll, absolutely no argument there.  I still think it takes even the writers a good month or so to figure things out.  Too many teams, too many games, too much bias with time zones, etc.  Plus so many teams playing absolute stiffs in the first month that it's hard to gauge anything for awhile.

Thank you, I try. With all of the sarcastic defensive posts going up today by ners and his gang, it seemed the right thing to do.

Big game tonight.  We lose, we're done officially.  We win, and we have a chance to make a mini-run here at the end and get to the dance.
