In order to prevent further concussions, IPFW player John Peckinpaugh wears boxing headgear during his games.  There are lots of photos in the story!

The best part is that students at Xavier teased him about having red hair and not the headgear.  Well played X.  Well played.

You're danm right.  I'm looking into repealing the auto seat belt laws, among other issues.  Lonely fight, though.  Wanna help?

Most players in his position would walk away from the game rather than wear a boxing helmet in front of thousands of fans and TV cameras.  I give him a lot of credit.

Actually, I was surprised not long ago to see a news item on the fact that head injuries are on the rise in basketball because of the physical play and lack of protection.  I know I've seen my son go down after a collision and his head hit the floor hard enough that you could hear the thud from across the gym.  Thankfully, he was OK.  They compared the incidence of head injuries in basketball to other sports and I was very surprised by the number of injuries.  My recollection is that they said it was a bigger issue in girls basketball and they focused on one girl in particular who had a pretty debilitating injury.

I'm not vouching for the accuracy of any of the information, just recalling here what I saw.  I'll see if I can find a link for the story.

Here's the link.

Reading the article, I'm left with the distinct impression that much of the "increase" is from greater awareness and reporting of head injuries.  The video doesn't even mention this.  They only thing they mention relating to reporting is the suspicion that the higher rate in girls is related to boys not reporting and/or seeking treatment as much.  Comparing the written article to the video that was aired on TV (which was the basis of my original post) is a classic example of crappy, sensationalistic TV news "journalism."

I remember McIlvaine had an issue with concussions one year at Marquette.  I don't recall if he missed time because of it, though.

He was real close to having to redshirt his freshman year b/c he had a few incidents in pre-season practice of getting knocked out as I recall. There was big concern about what was going on, and then they had him start wearing a mouth guard and I don't believe it ever happened again.
