Penn State hockey
« on: September 17, 2010, 09:24:02 AM »
Relative to the football discussion, look at how much Penn State is spending to play hockey. The costs are extreme and considering how long it takes to be competitive, starting a sport, paricularly at a private school, is a poor investment.MU would be better off strengthening their existing sports.

If the mens indoor track team  and the womens cross country team were strengthened.....would you ever even know it? I know I wouldnt. Strengthening some of the other sports seems like just as big of a waste of money to me.

How about that soccer stadium that has been on the drawing board for the past few years?

An $88M donation. Wow.

in a main board kind of way - its relevant to the discussions about MU adding another sport (as much as they may be beating a dead horse) particularly since hockey is often viewed as the cheaper cousin of a football program.

Just as interestingly, it enables the big 10 to possibly form a hockey conference on its own, which could have huge implications for college hockey conferences.

Sidenote: if that happens and the Big 10/12 kicks out some of the littler squads, i cant help but wonder if that would have any effect on schools looking to build their hockey programs or boost them to D1. Not even MU necessarily, but I would think that there would be a void that schools such as Western & Northern Michigan, Ferris State, Notre Dame, Miami of Ohio (power) and Bowling Green would be looking to fill.

Or, are there any potential B10 schools in the BE that could possibly be in a position to start a hockey team... Pitt? Rutgers? Syracuse? Boston College already has one....
There is a lot of high school/boarding school talent in the Northeast...

Although unlikely, it would seem that Milwaukee could be a good site for a college hockey team with either UWM or MU.  Plenty of facilities could be used for practice and the Cell could be used for games.  Unlike football, you wouldn't have the enourmous facility costs and its a sport that could include womens and mens teams.  If the Big Ten schools pull out, there will be some interest in patching some holes.

"Plenty of facilities?"  Where?

The Petit, Wilson Park, the BC, the Cell, etc.  There are plenty of rinks in Milwaukee that a college team could use for practice/games.

Games yes....practice no.

You are going to bus the team to Wilson or the Pettit Center?

No serious program does something like that.

MU built the $31 million AL on campus to stay competitive in Basketball.  And this for a sport that fields 12 guys and only needs a large room with a basketball court!

It's easy to field a sucky D3 team ... most of the ideas in this thread are really good if that is our goal.

To field a decent hockey team would take $88 million or more like Penn State.  Don't kid yourself.  Why do you think most decent college sports are at the large state schools?  The taxpayers foot the bill.

If I'm not mistaken, a majority of that $88M donation is to build a new on campus facility, isn't it?

Yes and to sport the athletic budget for the addition of men's and woman's scholarships.
