If anyone is sick of the tournament and looking for something to watch for, Madison Memorial is playing Arrowhead on WMLW in the Milwaukee area.  I haven't seen Vander play yet so I am excited to watch him play and see how he does with some good competition on a big stage.

2nd half soon to start.

Vander with 4 points. Madison 31, Arrowhead 23.

End of 3rd.

38 Madison Mem

Mills is unstoppable.
Arrowhead's raining threes on the Spartans.

Tom Crean's Tanning Bed

Memorial just hit an absolute buzzsaw.  Arrowhead can't miss tonight.

61-42 with 2:13 left.  Vander has 8 points.
The General has taken on a new command.

77ncaachamps

Game's essentially over.

Arrowhead is hitting open shots and dominating the boards. Madison is turning over the ball and are getting outhustled.

I am glad this wasn't the only game I have seen Blue play.  I have heard him described as disinterested during games before and I assumed it was an exaggeration.

I saw what they meant tonight.  I don't know what kind of plays Memorial was running but whenever Vander wasn't the focal point, he would sometimes literally stand still, away from the ball for 5+ seconds at a time.  Not even bouncing like he was getting ready to move, just standing there.  I don't think I have ever seen that before.  Heck, even I didn't stand around for that long during 3 on 3 YMCA league games and I was known for looking like my feet were in cement.  Otherwise, he was really forcing things (shots and passes) all night.

I am still happy as the hometown team one their first title.  And I am even happier that the next time I see Vander he will be wearing Gold (or Navy Blue or Powder Blue or White...).

Not a very good review of Blue for next year. Does not sound like he will be much help.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

I wouldn't pass judgement based on one game or even this season. I agree he didn't have a great game last night. He looked into it early on, but he was definitely trying to do too much and was forcing it too much. His shots were not falling and it looked like he became frustrated with himself. You can obviously see his athleticism. Once he gets in with better players, conditioning/weight program and better coaching, he will be OK. I don't see him being a star his freshman year, but he will be very good. Not many Freshman step right in and become the go to guy.

Memorial as a whole looked poorly coached last night. Way too much individual play on offense. Arrowhead figured out the 1-3-1 early in the second half and were just shredding it, hitting shots obviously helped. The Memorial coach should have switched to man to man much sooner, by the time he switched they were already down by 9.

The problem is that Memorial's defenders (outside of Blue) are actually very poor man defenders.  It showed in the semifinal against Appleton East...the switch to a zone in that game was what turned it around.

This Memorial team was not as good as the last couple of years.  They caught a break when Madison East lost in the sectional semifinal.  They caught a break when Middleton rimmed out a 3 pointer at the buzzer in the sectional final.  They caught a break when their first two state games were against Neenah and Appleton East.  Arrowhead had a much tougher road..beat Tokoto and Menomonee Falls in the sectional final, and played Verona (same conference as Memorial) and Marquette in the state tournament.

I completely agree with your sentiment regarding Blue.  He's not going to be the dominant McDonalds AA-type that some people on this board have portrayed him, but he's going to be a very good player...when the defense isn't focusing on him, his game will come at the BE level.

I was suprised at how poor at m-m they were. Is this a coaching issue, because they looked like they were quicker from top to bottom, but almost everyone of Arrowheads players could take it by them off the dribble and then , kick off on the help if there was any. Maybe I am not giving Arrowheads kids enough credit.

Collins is a very good coach...what he has done at MM is pretty remarkable.  I just don't think this batch of kids is as good as those in years past.

Madison Memorial has been the dominant team in Wisconsin for the last 7 years.  Much of this is thanks to Coach Collins, but they have also had talents like our beloved Wesley Matthews, Keaton Nankivil, Jeronne Maymon, and now Vander Blue.  This is the smallest team in those last 7 years and everyone obviously tries hard to key in on Blue.  He struggled in this game, but only after having a remarkable season and career.  Excited for him to play at Marquette.

Nankivil's presence as well as Maymon's *may* have been enough to thwart Mills's effort.
It was evident that Madison was not going to win an inside game.

Collins is a good coach, but his defensive coaching has always left something to be desired.  He's got a history of playing defenses that don't utilize the full talent of the guys he has on the roster.
