Getting students to the BC isn't a problem.  Getting the students that are there to get their lazy butts out of their seats to make any noise is the issue.  It's the worst year of students since Tom Crean's first couple years.

Students need to get their priorities straight.  Getting drunk and making a ridiculous amount of noise at the BC for games is priority number one!

MU should throw 1/2 price beer nights for students on occasion.

I haven't seen much of the student section this year ('08 grad living in Chicago...been to only 3 games), but I can definitely see where the current student is coming from. I'm gonna play devil's advocate to most people on this board, but do keep in mind that when I was at MU I was at EVERY home game wasted and loud as hell. That being said...

Nostalgia isn't always the most accurate thing in the world. This might be a weak year for the student section (I can't really say), but I'm sure you guys weren't all as loud and as crazy as you'd like to think. And most of you probably did it in the Mecca, which was quite a bit smaller and naturally louder. Filling up the BC is a little different. And you could legally drink when you were 18. Not saying underagers at Marquette don't have options...but its not as easy to get hammered and go to the game as it used to be.

I know I'm going to piss some people off with this, but I'm going to say it anyway. The prestige of MU has gone up dramatically in the last few years. All of my professors got their PhDs from Ivy League schools or something close (Harvard, Stanford, etc.). Marquette is a lot of work. Going out to a basketball game on a Tuesday night isn't always feasible for everyone. Yeah, grow a pair you say. But the reason you go to Marquette is to prepare yourself for life. This isn't Arizona State. Taking school seriously is something that should be congratulated.

ReneeRow, once again.  Issue is not enough showing up, but the ones that do act like they are at church.  Drunk or not, just make some noise.

I never had any problem getting inebriated for games as an underclassman.  My friends and I used to sneak liquor in pop bottles to the games.  I could remember bus rides from campus with beer cans rolling around on the bus floor.  Moral of the story is, if college kids want to get drunk, they will find a way.  One thing I do miss before games though was the all you can drink special at the corner before MU games.  Guaranteed you were drunk for the game!

Fightin 411

The students will come out and fill the student section when the team is ranked or if the game is on the weekend.  There are too many casual student fans to fill up the student section for every game if there is not a national buzz for the team or the game is not at a convenient time to attend.  I don't mean this as a slight...when your student section is a 1/4 of the undergrad population it's tough to fill the section that at any school.

Trust me, if the team was in the top 15 all year, the student section would be filled or 3/4 filled for almost all the conference games.  We'll have a good crowd for Saturday...Go Marquette!

Biggest. Game. Ever.  Come on, even as a student who would miss weeknight games for class or homework I'd lose my voice for a couple days when a weekend game of this magnitude came along.  And for the suit-wearing/sweatervested alumni going, just cause you're not in the student section doesn't give you a free pass to be lame and condescending....there were 70-something year old dudes going nuts at the Smith Center last night after all.

As a very proud alumni, no offense taken.

I think many here realize that 'that current rise in prestige' has a great deal to do with stature of the basketball program. If it seems a little higher lately, it's because we are standing on its shoulders.  I think there is room to grow.

Put down the books and give them hell on Sat.  Only wish I were up there to lend a voice.

students? how bout the alumni who only stand up and yell when the game gets close down the stretch.... or if maybe lazar has a great dunk/block....  if i see one alumni standing an screaming the whole game i'll meet him/her for a beer at turners after

Off topic here, but how many people are using "Warrior" handles now?  It seems hackneyed now and moreso than affectionate.

renee row, no one here's going to criticize you for wanting to get the most out of your education.  but taking three hours out of a night isn't going to kill anyone.

something to remember -- when i was in law school, they told us that the amount of time you spent studying per week was going to end up being the amount of time you would spend working per week post-law school.  in other words, the reward for being top of your class was a top job, which also required a greater work commitment.  that's great if you didn't have to kill yourself to get those grades, but if you did, you were going to be killing yourself for the rest of your life to equal the type of performance at work that you'd gotten in the classroom.

prioritize.  if you think that college life doesn't give you three hours during the week to watch a basketball game, just wait -- it's not just college that won't let you do that, life never will.

I agree with you, and like I said before I was at every game. I'm just saying some people might not have that luxury if they want to make decent grades and keep their financial aids. MU is demanding.

Now, a Saturday night in the first month of classes....no excuses. Everyone should be there.

My issue with the student section isn't the turnout so much as it is that eventually someone will write an op-ed piece in the Trib complaining about how unfair it is that the student section is on the end of the court.

Unfortunately, it's a little hard to take that position seriously when the students have trouble filling the lower bowl section for a revenge game that's being broadcast on ESPN2.

Now some would say that Madison always has their section full, however if you look into this there is an obvious reason why. Students there have to fight desperately to get tickets to a limited number of games, supply and demand. Not to mention the size difference between the sections. Marquette students get a ticket to every game which ruins the novelty of going to some of the smaller ones. The fact is that our section is huge compared to our school size! Marquette can draw as much students as many other schools that are much bigger than us and still not look full.

I have to take issue with this, Madison has problems filling their student section too.  Here's a thread from their board about how their 3rd level was empty for the Illinois game.  I'd guess the 3rd level makes up about 1/4 of their student section.
http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=193&f=2565&t=5598691

Plus, the number of seats in Madison's student section is roughly half the size of MU's (about 2,000 vs. 4,000) and their overall student population is about 4 times larger.  So out of 40,000 students, they couldn't get 2,000 to show up for Illinois!
