Here the link to the story on our site: http://mutvsports.com/2009/06/30/joe-dumars-thoughts-on-jerel-and-wes/

I spoke with Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars today about former Marquette guards Jerel McNeal and Wesley Matthews. I asked him where he had them slotted to go on their board, and he told me "in the middle of the second round." When I asked him to elaborate, he told me "we [the Pistons] really liked Jerel especially....but with [Will] Bynum, [Rodney] Stuckey, and our backcourt, there was just no room." I told Dumars that I thought Jerel's defensive abilities would land him an NBA job, and he completely agreed, saying, "He will get picked up by a team."

"You really think so?" I asked.

"Yes. For sure."

And that was that. I told him we would be looking forward to seeing his son Jordan suit up for USF in the fall for his freshman campaign. Funny enough, a lot of people were comparing the Pistons' second round pick (and former Georgetown Hoya) DaJuan Summers to Joe D himself.

I had the opportunity to discuss with Summers not only his NBA future, but the phenomenal games he was a part of betweeen Georgetown and Marquette. He told me before the camera rolled he had just recently talked with Wes Matthews about the OT game of '08. He told me the two had been working out together as well.

Would be nowhere without the support of the Marquette community. Can't beat the MU family.

Rooting for Lazar, Jimmy, Steve, Wes and Dwyane always. Go Buzz.

So with the bet, if Wes and Jerel make the NBA this year, don't I win the bet?  Or was the bet that they would be drafted?  I can't find the original thread.

I need a ruling. I thought I said that we had 2 NBA players on the squad so it seems to me that if they make it via free agency, I'm still a winner winner chicken dinner?   Yes?

Allow me to refresh your memory. As I recall, Warrior fans were so blinded by the stats put up by DJ, Wes, and Jerel that many felt they were a lock for the NBA. You chimed in and stated 2 would be in the league. I, of course, disagreed. At that point, you asked if I'd entertain a side wager. My reply was "you're on." The stakes were something from WI vs. something from CA. You know Usingers or cheese vs. fruits and nuts or wine or something like that.
You then asked whether the wager was to be drafted or make a roster? I replied, "pick your poison." No answer was ever forthcoming and no further discussion took place. There was a thread later on where you euphorically warned me that Jerel and Wes had many tryouts scheduled and were performing well at them. In fact John Hammond stated publicly that McNeal would be gone at #41. It was implied that we wagered on the easier of scenerios, being drafted.

If, however, you are so inclined to believe 2 of either James, McNeal, or Wes will make take aroster spots, then I agree to amend the original bet as follows:

If 2 or more of the 2008-09 seniors on the MU men's bb team are on an NBA roster at midnight on December 15, 2009, you owe me me nothing. If, on the other hand, 1 or fewer are on an NBA roster at midnight on Dececember 15, 2009, you owe me double the original bet.

Thoughts?

I thought the bet was that 2 of them would have been drafted if Crean was still the coach or whas that all three... you know with his NBA contacts and all.

Well I'm not sure anything has to be amended.  If I said they would be in the league, they would be in the league and don't have to be drafted...right?   ;)

I've already got the order ready to go, but I do think we should wait until opening day rosters to see if two of these guys make it.

Here's the original thread, though it looks like one that probably didn't particularly need to be dug up again: http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=13934.0

Wow, good pull...I'd say this post is pretty much the smoking gun, especially since no further clarification was given  ;D

Hey, I'm down with whatever floats your boat.

I'm going to send you something since I originally said drafted and then later said Drafted of Makes the Team but I didn't cement it (even though you were gracious enough to allow me to pick either option).  So since I left the bet in limbo, I'm going to pay up now.

Now, on the outside chance these two guys get picked up, which I think is extremely unlikely to happen to both, I'll at least have the ability to needle you on it in the future.   ;)
