Edit... to save everyone the trouble.

The University of Tennessee is flatly denying that men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl has been offered a job to coach at Memphis.

Tiffany Carpenter, Public Relations Director for the UT Athletic Department, told 10 Sports that Pearl had not received any offer.

She also said Pearl is in Detroit today, giving an award to Louisville Coach Rick Pitino.

Again, the University of Tennessee is denying reports that Bruce Pearl has been offered a 7-year, $21-million deal to coach at Memphis.

The University of Memphis would have to ask UT's permission to talk to a coach under contract.

WMC in Memphis is reporting University of Tennessee men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl was offered a 7-year, $21-million deal to coach there.

The University of Memphis recently lost its coach to the University of Kentucky. John Calipari signed a $4-million-a-year contract to coach the Wildcats.

Sources tell WMC that Pearl has been offered a deal and that he has expressed interest.

Wow, is Memphis really even an attractive job anymore? The only thing keeping them going was Calipari. Now that he's gone, I figured the program would slide down a few steps. Memphis really peaked under Cal, and there's really nowhere to go but down there. I think this would be a step down for Pearl (and any coach already in a major conference).

robmufan

Agreed.

I don't see why Pearl would leave for a conference like CUSA.  I foresee conference USA becoming a much more competitive league in the next 5 years.

Bruce won't be the next Memphis coach. UT boosters will see to that.

Why would he make a lateral move to a school that last a majority of its incoming recruits?

chapman

Just more BS from spoiled Memphis fans who don't realize they're a low-major without Calipari.  They also thought they were getting Mizzou or USC's coaches.  My guess is Calipari's recommendation of UTEP's coach is as good as they can do.

The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture.

GGGG

Why would Pearl do it?

1. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
2. He's not playing third fiddle to football and chickball
3. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
4. It's easier to win CUSA than the SEC, especially with a revitalized UK program
5. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
6. Memphis is actually not a bad place if you live in an area like Germantown.

Bruce's caddy/towel boy has now spoken.  BP will stay at Tenn.

Evidentally, Memphis is preparing to offer Bruce Pearl a 7-year, 21 million dollar offer -------

WBIR contributor Chris Low of ESPN.com says there is a real interest in Bruce Pearl on the part of the University of Memphis Tigers.

Low believes Memphis is prepared to offer Pearl as much as $21 million over 7 years. WMC-TV reported earlier in the day that such an offer had been made; the University of Tennessee has since denied that claim.

Low believes Memphis asking permission to speak to Pearl would be one of the last steps in the process.

Athletic Director Mike Hamilton told VolQuest.com yesterday he would not grant Memphis permission to speak to Pearl.

Low is reporting that it is believed Pearl would like to see improvements in the facilities at the University of Tennessee, and more money for his assistant coaches. As an example, two of Lane Kiffin's assistants make more individually than all of Pearl's assistants combined.

Tiffany Carpenter, Public Relations Director for the UT Athletic Department, told 10 Sports that Pearl had not received any offer.

She also said Pearl is in Detroit today, presenting an award to Louisville Coach Rick Pitino.

Poor Memphis.

Their AD and their boosters want to make a big hire.  They really want to be considered one of the big boys.  But in the end, they're just gonna get used.

Surely that's a joke.  I guess that the rampant, unsubstantiated, Katz-like, speculation has begun.

Chico's -

Why is that not true? Just curious. And are you familiar with the notion of tortious interference with a contract? If so, how would that not apply? Does it have something to do with the specifics of the contract?
