Sorry Navin thought you were saying that DJ could finish first in assists.

How did you come up with 61.  I am coming up with 31 (00, 0-5, 10-15, 20-25, 30-35, 40-45, 50-55).
Agree with the numbers, but that's 37, not 31.

Also, yes this is a college, not NBA rule.

I think doing it either way is fine as long as it is a clearly stated policy (ie-I think UNC only retires jerseys not numbers).

Agreed.

The problem is not the policy, it's just the lack of communication/consistency.

They can make it jerseys if they want, but they better get buy in from all of the former players.

Brute Force wasn't thrilled.

Haha, you're right.  Good thing I proofread.

Brute should have been pissed. Retiring a number is for the very elite of a program. MU has been too soft on who gets their number retired. If you only retire the elite there are plenty of numbers to be used. I loved Earl Tatum and Luke but do not believe they should be retired. Doc is a great guy but was not a player worthy of having number retired either.

#30
I guess only George Thompson gets excited when someone wears his number.

I don't remember Bo Ellis (31) getting all worked up when Doc Rivers (31) wore his number (both are in the rafters).  And, the same for Maurice Lucas (20) when Steve Novak (20) wore his number.   :o

I'm sure there are many more examples, those are just the ones off the top of my head.   George needs to relax, Lazar would've represented 24 just fine!

MU has always retired jerseys, not numbers!

To redirect this thread to the scoring record... I think it was mentioned that in 5 games it will be broken.

According to my calculations, it might take longer factoring in this year's PPG.

Jerel has 1652 points and if he averages 18.9 ppg in the for the next 7 games, he will have 1784 points at the end of the Seton Hall game (passing George's 1773). If not, and averages slightly less, may get it the next game @Gtown, on TV for the whole country to see, that would be nice! I am guessing with Big East opponents Jerel will score slightly less than 19 the next 7 games, and get it vs Georgetown.

Dominic James while averaging 11.4 PPG, currently standing at 1648 points, 125 points short of George Thompson's would be set to break the record in 11 games. That would be the 2nd to last regular season game vs Pitt. If not, and averages slightly less, could get to #2 all-time on Senior Night vs Syracuse (assuming McNeal's health).

The Lens

The record obviously deserves an asterik but that doesn't change the fact that Jerel & DJ are about to do what 30+ years of 4 year players have not been able to do.

Jerel and DJ are in rarified air.

There are two ways to look at scoring records:

1. Most points scored: Who scored the most points playing for Marquette? (This is the way record books typically rank scoring records. Just look at the MU wiki.) GT holds this record, and Jerel and DJ will likely both pass him this year. It is impressive how long the record has held, but as (or more?) impressive that two players will pass it in the same season.

2.Scoring average: Who had the highest per game scoring average as an MU player? Funny, but I couldn't even find this statistic in the MU wiki. Does that say something about the value placed on this (rather than just an asterisk if GT is passed for most points scored)? In any case, I believe that it is GT or Wade with the highest scoring average. This tells us about productivity, but not necessarily about longevity.

The bottom line to me is that it is amazing that GT is at or near the top of both lists, given how much time has passed since he played. Yes, Wade would've been up there if he had stayed, but he didn't. George played in, and maximized his productivity in three seasons. Jerel and DJ earned (and I mean EARNED) their standings in four years.

Neither of those were retired when the following player wore them.  MU didn't retire Bo's number until a few years after Doc left, and Lucas didn't get his retired until after Novak left.

It has not always been retired jerseys, in fact if you look at the old media guides it used to say retired numbers, but after the GT incident Crean changed it to jerseys.

A four-year Marquette basketball player has already surpassed George's total. Abbie Willenborg wrapped up her 118-game career in 2000 with 1,818 points.
