Tom Crean's Tanning Bed

The General has taken on a new command.

Clearly the appointment of the next BE Commissioner will be very important to the BB schools especially.

Coming from PC where he was the SID and working as close with Dave Gavitt as Tranghese did, he was a BB first guy.  Hope we are lucky enough to have the next Commish be so inclined as well.

Maybe he figured it wasn't worth stickin' around with Crean gone.  (That's a joke.)

Agree we need a strong Bball commissioner.

This is a very major deal....hope they get it right.  I wonder if they will bother to interview any candidates or wait 14 months and promote from within.   :o

ND has 13+ months to go before they can promote from within sans interview.     ;D

About a yr ago, the BE hired Gavitt's kid.........i wonder if this job is wired

I think this is the first step in a long journey towards dissolution.

I'd promote Steve Cottingham for the job. He seems a natural choice.

Could be. Depends how much of a "basketball guy" they hire.  Football is where the money is at, but for the Big East, basketball is an almost equal anchor in terms of television contracts, etc.  The hiring will likely foreshadow the future of any possible break.  I think if it's Gavitt's kid, that bodes well for the basketball schools.  If it's Carparelli, bad news.  If it's Marinatto then that would be interesting.  Of course, they could go outside as well but something tells me they won't.

cept he'll say he doesn't want it for a while and when no suitable replacement is found, or searched for, he'll take the position.

Some are saying he should have retired before helping MU on the coach's search.

Tranghese or Cottingham?  :P

I hear Cottingham is chairman of the search committee. He has set himself a deadline of one year and doesn't plan to interview anyone.

I would be very, very surprised if this isn't the first step in the conference's split.  Football is just so much more lucrative right now, that I really doubt the BB schools are going to be able to hold their weight here.

Probably, but it puts the schools with good football and good basketball in a tough spot.

Where is Louisville and Pitt going to play basketball?  Where is Cincinnati going to play?  Those schools know football drives the bus but they also don't want to throw their basketball programs away so they will look for a solid home.  When (if) it breaks up you will see many other conferences changing as well by default.  Whether it's the SEC taking on teams, the ACC, the Big Ten, etc.  Something has to give which is why the breakup is not inevitable simply because of the downstream logistics that need to happen.

I could see one Big East school leaving on it's own, first.   Louisville would not surprise me one bit.

I believe that.  However, did he tell doc rivers, tony larussa, mike maddux, dwade, matt mortensen, izzo, mike mccarthy, 4ever, the extended harbaugh clan & katz first?
