Better yet, go to a game. PM Fieldhouse Flyer so you can get seats together and spend some quality time together post-game. It'll be a fun day.

here are stats MU posted on their FB feed today regarding the class of 2029 (good God, really???):

more than 1,930 students from 39 states, two U.S. territories and 19 other countries
📈 Nearly 21,000 students applied for the Class of 2029
👩🏿🦱👨🏽🦱 Marquette welcomes its most diverse class in recorded history, with 33% identifying as students of color
☝️ 22% are first-generation college students
🧠 Nearly 13% of the class was accepted and committed to the highly competitive Honors Program
🧀 More than 38% of the class hails from Wisconsin, while over 37% of the class hails from Illinois
🙏 130 students attended Jesuit high schools

One other note I'd seen posted elsewhere (maybe here) was that the acceptance rate was under 80% for the first time in many years.

The Jesuit school stat seems really low to me. It seemed like there were at least 100 in my class from MUHS, SLU High, Creighton Prep and Loyola Academy.

I think you have a comma out of place.  21k applicants?   That would make the acceptance rate around 9%

Exactly.

I am curious what the yield rate was. Also, 75% from WI/IL. Does anyone know how that compares to previous years?

Xavier will now require students to live on campus for three years. The 2025 entering class was down 139 students from the previous year and retention was lower. Overall enrollment at X is down 600 from last fall and nearly 2000 from five years ago.

I think you mean "will NOW require students to live on campus for three years."

Yeah, I have heard about Xavier's struggles for a while now. And they are an outlier, in a bad way, even among midwestern private colleges. They aren't terribly wealthy with an endowment of $270 million, which makes me wonder if they just aren't competitive when it comes down to financial aid awards. For comparison's sake, Marquette's just eclipsed $1B.

yes, I made the correction.

That X's endowment is so low is shocking to me. Butler's is similarly low. Those are the two lowest in the Big East.

You've heard me talk Xavier before.  My daughter chose Xavier and graduated in 2023.  They made the largest financial award of the half dozen universities she was accepted to.  Marquette was her first choice but attending would have required another $42k in student loans  and she said "I like Xavier and it's just not worth that much extra in loans to attend MU."  Marquette did offer (what I heard from other sources) the most amount they could offer.

Back in 2019 when she was accepted she was told that she would be in one of the largest classes Xavier ever had and it also would be the last year of these purposely increased class sizes.  I never really heard or read an explanation on this comment.

FWIW, I do know two students from Connecticut who are now college freshman had Xavier high on their list.  One chose Marquette but they matched Xavier's very good financial offer and the other student picked Dayton.  My friend said his son just liked the Dayton freshman dorm and something else that I don't recall.

Butler's is just under $300M. Seton Hall is about $350M.

This might be the explanation - X brought in too many students who couldn't make it academically or pay their bills and left. Retention for last year was only 78%, not good. So it sounds like they are shifting their recruiting strategy to those who will have a greater likelihood of returning for their sophomore year, which results in a smaller incoming class. Though they still missed their enrollment targets for 2025.

chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://www.xavier.edu/announcements/documents/preslettertocampusfinal-23-may-2025.pdf

Over the past number of years, Xavier had drifted towards recruiting cohorts of first year students with increasing needs for resources – primarily financial and academic – which began to outstrip our ability to support their success, in keeping with our Jesuit Catholic mission. The result? We saw decreasing rates of students who were able to successfully complete their first year at Xavier and continue as sophomores. In fact, only 78% of the fall of 2023 first year students returned as sophomores last fall. Many of these students had financial and/or academic needs that we were simply unable to adequately resource. To me, continuing to admit large cohorts of students with high academic need and high financial need, given our resources and with the knowledge that a large percentage of those students would be unable to return after one year – or even after one semester – felt very contrary to our mission.
