Stevie's biggest contribution to this years team is making big defensive plays in crucial moments to spark a run, its been one of his superpowers for a few seasons now.

The Big East knows Stevie Mitchell by now, they know that he's one of the best defensive guards in the conference and that he thrives off of quick twitch surprise steals when you least expect it, when he's acting like he's going to play you soft.

The rest of America doesn't quite know Stevie Mitchell as well. The scouting report might say "let him shoot" and "he can defend" but it's a lot different to experience it and not be beaten by it.

Just last year against Western Kentucky Stevie had the most impactful stretch of the game and was the spark plug in the win.
He got a steal at around the 16 min mark, if memory serves, for an and one. Then he got a big block and rebound.

I wouldn't go as far as predicting he becomes a national sweetheart- that would take a Final4 run and a lot of clutch 3s or big offensive games to go along with his trademark D, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he was a huge culprit for a nice run

But I don't agree with the Stevie comment. Dude has mostly been brutal for a couple months. He's obviously dealing with multiple substantive injuries. I love the guy, but I don't see him going from 0/7 from the field and looking literally awful to being 1/1 Stevie in a matter of 10 days. Hope I am wrong there tho, because we need all of Stevie, Chase and Ben to be playing well for this to be anything more than than an 0-2 or 1-2 close to the season.

He certainly has had his ups and downs likely do to injuries........but to say he has been mostly brutal for a couple of months is overstating.

He's had probably 6 bad games in the last 2 months.......he's also had games where he has scored 18,13,21, 22,17,14 and 13 in an efficient manner in that stretch. Also had 10 games with 2 steals or more......he's had 1 game in that stretch with more then 2 turnovers.

We always seem to remember the bad games more than the average or good ones......especially when they come in losses.

I do not buy into the injury talk.  Either you are good enough to suit up, play and contribute or you sit on the bench and get healthy.  Every team and literally every college basketball player is banged up at this time of year. IMHO, using injuries as an excuse is the same as blaming refs for losing games.

Saying a player may be impacted by injuries is not an excuse........it's just a fact( he is injured) and an opinion. Stevie would never use it as an excuse......neither would Shaka.....but that doesn't mean we can't acknowledge that it " might " have been a factor in some of his bad games.

Yes many players are banged up by the end of the season but not all bumps and bruises impact performance the same.

As far as having Stevie sit on the bench until he's completely healthy.......that's ridiculous....lhe wants to play....he's a key player.....and we need him.....even if he's not 100%.

How about we just appreciate a kid who plays his ass off every game......healthy or hurt?

I appreciate Stevie and all he has brought to the team over the last 4 years more than any other player on MU due to toughness and grit. I will not waver from if you are hurt and your play is affecting the team, you need to take a some time off. After the at Nova game Feb 21, Stevie had just come off of 2 games in a row that were his worst of the year by far. We had PC on Feb 25, then Gtown March 1. Stevie could have sat the PC game and then had 8 days off before Gtown.

Yes, Shaka would have to fight Stevie to make him sit, but that is what the head coach is paid to due - make tough decisions.

This should be handled in the scoopers "come to jesus" moment when they address the team in person.
