Since Al stepped foot on campus, only 3 coaches have gotten their first Marquette team into the tournament:

++ Hank, who inherited Butch, Whitehead and other Al leftovers.

++ Buzz, who inherited the Amigos and Lazar from Crean.

++ Shaka, who inherited only two bench players and one guy who had played a total of 38 minutes as a freshman.

Also, looking at the most recent coaching "accomplishments" of the last several MU coaches ...

++ Wojo, still living off MU's teet after having been unceremoniously fired.

++ Buzz, 3 years, 0 NCAAT appearances at A&M.

++ Crean, just canned by Georgia after being an abject failure - 0 NCAAT appearances and four SEC finishes of 10th place or lower in 4 seasons.

++ Deane, .457 winning pct in 11 years at Lamar and Wagner, with 1 NCAAT appearance and 0 wins.

++ K.O., .425 winning pct in 3 1/2 years at USC, with one losing appearance in the NCAAT first four and a 1-17 record in his last full Pac-12 season.

++ Dukiet, never coached D1 hoops again.

++ Rick, reached NCAAT round of 32 in 5th and final year at St. Louis after very successful runs at Utah and Ball State.

++ Hank, never coached again after handing the team to Majerus in 1983.

Point?

Al was a good coach?

I thought it was interesting. They're facts. I'm not providing any opinions. Others can read the facts and decide upon their own point.

Shaka did a very good job capitalizing on major rule changes, especially the extra year for covid super seniors and immediate eligibility for transfers. Otherwise, I think he would have only had MU's 3 returning players plus the true freshmen. No NCAA bid.

Since Shaka is starting 4 transfers, without those the season might have been a true disaster!  It might happen again next year

I think our work in the transfer market has been underrated. Two grad starters on a tourney team, two underclassman starters with 2-3 years left. I don't think many (myself included) saw this as a huge immediate impact transfer crop, so I'd consider it very impressive.
