I'd presume most are looking at their options now, put their names in the portal maybe depending on how quick the search is. There will be playing time available, so depending on who it is, some may feel that is their best option to have a role they want. With Covid shutting down everything, I can't see the main 3 guys having much to tie them to MU unfortunately, especially since they will have plenty of opportunities elsewhere.

I'd agree that only a Pitino would really keep everyone together because of his credentials, however I'm a no-no guy.  I doubt any of the recruits stay unless the new coach was already recruiting them.

Could Gates keep one or two of the big 3 in the fold? Sure, but I'm not holding my breath. This is a rebuild.

Transfers are just part of the game now. Every new coach basically has to re-recruit the current roster.  It's a chaos year in the entire NCAA and chaos can bring opportunity.  Let's all be patient and optimistic.

It's quite possible that the players also saw that wojo needed to go.

Agree, but I think some will transfer rather than being part of a rebuild/new system (actually, a system) and a coach they did not choose to be their coach. I hope that some will stay but will not be surprised if we have a big walkout.

I would agree with you. If I was Scholls, I'd be asking for two weeks (until the end of the NCAA Tournament) to get my ducks in a row, find my coach and give him a chance to sell the existing team and the recruits.

I agree, there will be plenty of PT for the folks who want to invest in what Marquette will be. I also agree that the players knew something was really wrong this year and may be relieved the University did something.

Also am thinking that we will have some transfers but I'm optimistic the Big 3 on this team plus Greg Elliott and OSA stick around.

You think we get everyone back except for the last two guys on the bench (dexter and Perez)? I don't know why everyone is saying Oso sticks around either. Surprised he stayed after Stan left.

I dont think its as important as people make it out to be. Lots of new coaches take over fairly intact rosters

MU82

Assume they all go, be happy if 1 or 2 or 3 or 5 (including recruits) stay.

And to answer the OP ... crucially important. Some of them might hit it off with Coach A but not Coach B, and vice versa. But there's little way to gauge that before the hire -- and even if there were, that shouldn't be the primary consideration.

But in those cases transfers had to sit a year. Not anymore

To whether or not current players transfer out? Extremely important. Probably the most important factor in their decision.

To which coach we hire? Shouldn't be part of the calculus. You don't hire a coach just because you think he will keep your current roster intact.

Unless you're in the situation Marquette was in the 2008, with a talented veteran team with a chance to win big.

But that's was also a successful coach moving on to a "higher" job. Not the first MU coach to get punted in 2 years

The Lens

I was planning on Wojo losing at least 2 of the Big 3.  Now anything is possible.  But realistically we'll probably lose all 3.  Anything less is gravy.  Still the right move.

If you hire the right guy, the right players will be in place in 1-2 years. Hopefully they hire a guy with a system and you see if the current guys fit in or not. I have no concern over players now that a new coach will be hired.

This.

Look, we don't even know who was coming back even if Wojo stayed. But if it was everybody and Wojo was at the helm next year would have looked a lot like this year. Paying a small price (10th place instead of 8th?) for a year is a small one for the chance to make the program relevant again.
