Poll, Former Player As A Future MU Coach?

This is not a post about firing Wojo.  So don't turn it into that.

Rather, I was watching Georgetown/Depaul and they mentioned (more than once) Patrick Ewing is a former player and now their head coach.  Ditto, Ed Cooley at Providence, Chris Mullens at St. Johns, and Joey Meyer at Depaul.

So, who has a shot to do this for MU?

I voted for Travis because Wardle will never get the job.  Travis spent time with the program on the bench and has a good idea of what needs to be done at Marquette having been on the court and on the sideline.  Whether he wants to coach or not, is the question.

Cooley never played at Providence College. He is from there and played high school basketball in the city but was never a Friar player.

I also voted for Travis. However, I do not think any of the above will become the heed coach at MU.
Boylan has to be in his mid 60"s, so he is already too old. Rivers is maybe 10 years younger, so he is not too old now, but he will be in a few years. Now when I say to old, I am looking at hiring a coach who realistically would be around at least 5 years.

Except for Doc, I do not envision any of the coaches being great recruiters.  I think Wardle can coach, but I do not have faith that he can recruit enough top talent to win in the Big East to the level most posters here want.

I also went Travis simply because he's shown an interest in coaching and is young enough that who knows what could happen in 10-20 years. However, I think the more likely answer is "none of the above."

It's my understanding that Travis left the coaching staff because he decided it wasn't his thing. I would be very surprised to see him as a head coach.

I'm not saying Wardle would be better than Travis, but Wardle also spent time on the MU bench after his playing career was over.

Howard has the whole package for what is needed to be a successful coach.  He just needs to check some boxes as an assistant and on the recruiting trail.  His work ethic sets him apart and he has a charismatic personality that should serve him well on the recruiting front.

Of the MU alumni listed in this poll, I think Joe Chapman has upside potential. He is a dynamic guy and has been running a youth basketball program for a while now, so understands kids . Next step for him will be to get an assistant coach job somewhere  and work his way through the ranks.

Wardle has proven he can run a D1 basketball program at two separate schools now. There is value in that skill set and experience. I expect his name to come up this year on the coaching carousel. So Brian may be in a position to upgrade to a higher conference depending on the opening . He is also only 40 .  It is not easy to recruit at the low and mid major level and he has demonstrated he can do that. So if MU was inclined to hire an alum I would guess he would be in the mix.

I believe this.  I should probably have given Chapman more thought.

   if i had a 2nd pick though, markus has the most potential because of his talents, drive and his message.  i could see markus and his brother jordan forming a great coaching team

Jon works for a college athletics recruiting firm, since being fired by SIUE as head coach last season. (Tony Barone is the new head coach there and former assistant under Jon)

I'd put Wardle as the only guy over a 0.01% chance to be the head coach at Marquette from this list.

I'd say Wes as a possibility if he ever wanted to get into coaching. Long NBA career and seems like a very cerebral player.

I also remember while he was here, he was the one the coaching staff had show around recruits. I could see him doing broadcasting in some form as well.
