A guard on the Baylor WBB (Juicy Landrum) team made 14 3's in a single game the other day. Anyone else think we see Markus go for that record in the next few weeks vs the last few cupcake games of his career?

Its DJOver

Markus has been much better about playing within the team system this year. I don't want him to go hunting for a pretty meaningless record. If he plays within the system and gets it great, but he'll get plenty of accolades this year regardless.
Scoop motto:
Quote from: ATL MU Warrior on February 06, 2025, 06:04:29 PMthe stats bear that out, but

Seems unlikely. He's hit 11 twice. It's possible against Central Arkansas, who plays at a blisteringly fast pace and is terrible at limiting three point attempts and makes, but I think it's more likely he would do that in a meaningful game. Consider Markus' 7 highest-scoring games:

  • 53: Creighton overtime
  • 52: Providence overtime
  • 51: USC
  • 45: Kansas State
  • 45: Buffalo
  • 38: Villanova
  • 38: Loyola-Maryland
The only game that wasn't a significant opponent was Loyola-Maryland, when he was clearly going for McNeal's record. He did put on a show against Bethune-Cookman (37) and had the 11 made threes against Chicago State, but in general most of his biggest games come against big competition.

So, does Markus. Last year, 38% of his threes were assisted. This season, it's 64%. It's nice to have teammates who don't put all the onus and blame of sharing the ball just on one person.

This team is much less one dimensional with the pieces added on how the rock is moved—the team assist % on both twos and threes are way up. Last season's team assist rate was the lowest since 2001. Look no further than Jamal Cain's improvement.

That assisted 3s stat says a lot about this team.  They pass the ball way better than last year, which is funny because I always saw Sam as an excellent passer and assist guy for a forward.

Those are great stats.  The Hausers, according to the men who love eating meat, didn't have a problem with Markus (despite that they would've been back had Markus not been back), they just thought Wojo didn't know how to/was unwilling to reign in Markus.  Turns out they were part of the problem in that nobody beyond Markus could break down a defense and either create a shot for themselves or create a shot for a teammate.  This year there are more guys who can do that, and given how they were telling their coach how the team's offense should be run, you would've thought those two could've seen that in practice every day with Greg and Koby in the gym.  Maybe their knowledge for how the team should've been run and for how the team would play this season was a bit off.

Actually, Joey had a higher assist rate than Sam.

That said, I think the biggest difference from season to season is the team has other creators. Tower repeatedly pointed out that the biggest loss last season was Greg. Let's face it, Markus was the only creator on the active roster last season, personnel-wise. Teams double and triple contained Markus last season and that led to offensive sludge as they got scouted.

I'm looking forward to the conference season, after we lose a couple games, that people will start asking if we would have been better off with the Hausers here.

Marquette playing well right now.  The offense looks good.  There will be hiccups and poor showings in conference play for sure.

The one thing this shows is that Wojo can coach offense.  With all the roster changes the past few years, we have been elite or near elite with our offense.

The system will continue to look better the higher level talent you put into it. The recruiting side of it seems to be providing a good yield so far. Just have to keep it up

Koby / Greg / Symir >>>>>> Chartouny

But of course, the Hausers had to know this.

Markus might drop 60 tonight!

It could be a three-point shootout tonight.

In the immortal words of George "Brute Force" Thompson, it could be a "wang dang doodle."

Our defense has improved under Wojo and staff the last two years, too.

2 point shooting is still a problem.......this is the worst 2 point shooting team in Wojo's tenure.

And it's guard driven.  eFG% is there but yikes.

Yeah I feel like the guards have difficulty both generating uncontested shots off the dribble as well as finishing in traffic. Seeing some green shoots lately with some backdoor layup opportunities being generated with the faster pace and crisper ball movement, hopefully the 3 point shooting can be weaponized into better 2FGA opportunities as opponents overplay the perimeter.

Not that anybody was waiting for my approval, but this is a really good discussion.

Keep up the good stuff, EFR, Dr B, wades and others.

True that Markus was the only guy on roster last year who could break someone down off the dribble...but the ball stuck A LOT more last season, and usually with Markus.  Greg isn't a break you down off the dribble guy.  We are getting some penetration due to the ball moving a lot better around the perimeter.

Biggest difference I see is FAR less of Markus doing his multiple dribble between legs, shake/bake, into step back 3's without even making one pass on the offensive end.  I feel Wojo has gotten through to him this year to share the ball more.

Last season shot attempts:

Markus  600
Sam  377
Joey  134

I don't blame the Hausers for wanting better ball movement/sharing.  But, so far its worked out just fine with them gone, and that's a credit to Wojo.

Agree with this. Some of the improved ball movement is having better secondary playmakers, but some of it is a clear change in Markus.

Sam's shot attempts by year
2017 205   shot % 16.5
2018 249             20.8
2019 377.            23.1

It's almost like each year he had a bigger role in the offense......

Excellent post.

Sam would have had a huge offensive year for Marquette. He would have been an important player on a very good team that could have made a deep tournament run. He chose to quit the program.

I wish no ill will on him, but I certainly don't pine for him.

I am happy we have a bunch of fine players who want to be Warriors.
