Also have MU at 200-1. Not sure when I'd start hedging against that.

You are delusional if u believe what u type.  U have used the "worst 2g by far" in every post that u could possibly manage, even if it had nothing to do with the topic.  Ive credited Sacar on many occassions on stepping up his consistency n contributions this year.  U do the same with many other topics n posters.  Own it bro, a little respect may follow.

Lighten up, Francis. And please don't forget to also give me credit for poking fun at your speling, gramer and punk'chewation!

Yeah, that's a tough question. I'm a horseplayer whose goal is to get live to overlays in the Morning Line. If I really like a horse and I think that horse should be 8-1ML and he's listed at 15-1 or 20-1 on the ML, I will single that horse in a pick3 or pick4 and spread in the other races to make almost certain I will cash if my key horse wins. So I'm hedging on the periphery already. Then when it comes to the key/cash leg, I will put my horse in 2nd behind the ALL button in exactas, and if he's 20-1 or higher at the Post, I will hedge with him in the 3rd/Show slot.

It's obviously a different ballgame with hedging hoops wagers, especially involving a team you presumably love. I am such a passionate fan of MU basketball that I seriously used to bet against us to take out "Win insurance" because I was so disheartened by MU losing.

I would advise you not to hedge much until the championship game, which we are clearly heading to :).
Make a large hedge bet then, as theres nothing worse than watching your huge long shot get beat at the wire. Of course, it's hard to "cover" when you stand to cash $20,000. What are you supposed to do, bet $10G on Duke at Even Money in the final game? (We will have blown out so many teams by then, the game will be a picEm  ;)). If you do that, you've slashed your 200-1 in half. To me, MU winning is so off-the-charts rewarding to me emotionally, that I would gladly cut my winnings in half to hedge against the agony of watching our Warrior Eagles get that far but come up short.
Zenyatta has a lot....a lot... of ground to make up. She gets there from here she'd be a super horse......what's this.....Zenyatta hooked to the grandstand side....Zenyatta flying on the outside....this....is...un-belieeeeeevable!...looked impossible at the top of the stretch...

Yes, "character revealed," says the guy who rips on young men who give 60+ hours a week to their school's basketball team.

Well, I know you think Dan Rather is a liar.

What did I lie about there? You didn't repeatedly rip Luke and Sacar, Mr. Character Revealed?

To answer my own question, wouldn't start thinking about it until the Elite 8 at the earliest. Have 20 on it, so 4000 potential win. Would like to get at least a 100 in value back out of it if they make it to the Elite 8. Obviously hope they're 33-4 at that point. If hedged enough that only got back 3000 if MU won it, would obviously plenty happy with that.

I'm kind of an on-the-periphery horse guy BTW. Not to go to a namedrop that someone else here is famous for, but owner/operator of Horse Racing Radio Network is good friend. He, I and some other friends went in on a 3-year-old about 10 years ago now. Won his 1st race at Churchill, finished 3rd in his second race at Arlington, but unfortunately petered out after that. Will probably do something similar on a horse again soon. Pay attention to horse racing in Triple Crown season, and a little around the Breeders Cup. Thoroughly enjoyed Keeneland when been there. So I kind of understand horse hedging, but not a ton.

Have another buddy who's a UL fan who's done what you call take out win insurance a lot over the years. Figures he's happy if UL wins or he's happy if he wins his wager on the dog plus the points, or doubly happy if the dog covers but UL wins.

Worst non-hedges can recall buddy's making was one not hedging in Games 6 and 7 of the '02 WS when he had the Giants at 12-1 to win it. Let it ride instead of at least guaranteeing his initial bet and lost it all. Also have run a bracket pool for more than 30 years. Had a buddy who had Butler to win it one of the years they were in the final, would've won a 1000 had they won, but 10 bucks if they lost it, and did nothing, not even the at-the-time 10 pool entry fee.

Very hard to make money as a horse owner. It's a great way to entertain friends and clients, though. One of my MU buddies/roommates owns at a pretty high level. He was kind enough to invite me into the winners circle at Keeneland last spring after one of his turf horses won an allowance race there. It was the thrill of a lifetime, and I didn't even own 1% of the horse. Keeneland is hallowed ground, as Lexington is home to some of the greatest farms and breeding operations.

Mr. Sand-Knit

My company sponsors a race at Thurby each year at Churchill.  The paddock, tunnel, and winners circle, and sky box experience is real something to experience.  I think my tailor looks forward to it each year as well.

The last best opportunity I had to go to the Derby came in the last year I was coaching college softball, and was the same weekend as our conference tourney. Will go someday, hopefully sooner rather than later.
